A bit of a curious incident during last night during Fox’s broadcast of the Sox-Indians game. Sometime in the middle of the game, the cameras focused on a fan in the crowd, who happened to be Taylor Twellman, one of the stars of the New England Revolution of the MLS. I have to think the camera operators knew who he was, and that he wasn’t just picked out at random. But in the broadcast booth, no one knew him, apparently – or at least they didn’t say anything. By contrast, when the camera picked up Mark Shapiro, sitting there looking glum, it usually earned a comment.
So was I alone in recognizing the guy?
I noticed the shot you’re talking about, and was expecting JB & McCarver to say something about him, and assumed they just weren’t handed the copy about him in time. Had no idea who he was however. That’s got to be set up ahead of time between the camera operator, production crew and booth though - the producers have to let the booth know “We’re about to put Steven King on the feed - say something about him.”
Did they ever mention who Mark Shapiro was? I remember thinking they didn’t mention him on any of the shots of him and his hot companion, but I may have missed one in the early innings.
I do remember them saying the name at least once.
Those two could see each other on TV and go, “Hey, Joe Morgan!”
Oh, I know who he is, and they’ve definitely mentioned him during previous games, but I didn’t think they did so during last night’s game. Sorry for the confusion.
Not to knock either, but did they really expect 99% of the viewing audience to know who either of those two are, let alone be interested in seeing them in the crowd? That type thing is usually reserved for, you know, famous people.
And yet they took the trouble to show both of them. Showing Shapiro was at least topical (and he had a beautiful blond companion/spouse), but why take the trouble to show Twellman if you’re not going to mention his name? It felt like a (minor) screwup, and I was led to wonder how many people would recognize Twellman without prompting.
I don’t know if they assumed the announcers would recognize him (which would be a stretch), or if they forgot to tell them who they were.
