I love it! My dad used to buy it on special occasions. Then we moved to Philly and it’s everywhere. My preferred brand is also Joyva. Halvah is sold as Halvassi and Chelwa in the Russian markets around here.
The Indian version, Halwah, is semolina based. While halva is sesame based. I’ve only gotten to try halwah once. It was exquisite and I keep looking for more.
Nearly every health store in Britain stocks it, and most supermarkets. Usually the same make, and boxed in rectangles; but a few years ago I found a jewish make that was in a plastic tub, and slightly stickier. It was far superior to any other I’ve had.
I dispise the stuff. It’s one of maybe 2 or 3 foods that I would rather die than eat. I fact if I ever accidentally swallow poison, just hold some Halavah in front of my nose and I will throw up.
I had it years ago and it was decidedly umiqie, so much so that I almost couldnt decide if I liked it. or not, it was sweet but had a chalky texture, hard to explain, i just had the store bought. packaged version,
