This looks like a fairly safe bet for a high production Cirque du Soleil show and from the promo clips it looks great.
However, when looking at people’s review in places like TripAdvisor or Yelp it seems to be a very polarizing show. People are either gushing over it as their favorite Cirque show they’ve ever seen or they are at the opposite end of the scale saying it was the worst and they actually fell asleep cause they were bored.
Too much ‘theatre’ and not enough ‘circus’ for them.
I saw Ka in Vegas a couple years ago. It’s the only Cirque show I’ve seen. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I liked it. I didn’t think it was too much “theatre.” I’m not a theatre person. I thought the concept and the performances were pretty amazing. I don’t know how one could fall asleep. I kept waiting for someone to fall off that ever-moving stage, but the athleticism displayed is incredible.
I’ve seen most of the Cirque shows in Vegas and Ka is one of my favorites, right up there with O. It isn’t very circus-y, it’s performance art by very athletic acrobats.
count me in as having seen it a few years ago and enjoying it. Its the only one I’ve seen, so I can’t compare to others. Without the program, I didn’t really get the plot, but there was a lot of cool stuff going around on stage and in the wings that I really enjoyed it.
The locals have always advised me not to see this one (same with the Chris Angel one), so I never have. I mean, those literally seem to be the only two shows people consistently tell me to avoid.
If you want something a little naughty, Zumanity is pretty good. Ok, it’s more than a little naughty, though. Love is great. I really want to go see the new Elvis one, too.
Whatever you do, don’t buy the tickets at the box office or online. Go the day of the show, first thing in the morning, and find a half price ticket booth. Personally, I use Tix4Tonight, but there are a bundle of similar companies. You can get some great seats at a pretty fat discount. This is how I get all of my show tickets.
I’ve seen Ka, O, and Love in Vegas and two of the traveling shows.
Ka is my favorite of them (though O is close; Love wasn’t good). I liked that Ka has just a bit more narrative structure than your average Cirque show and that helped create a sense of place. Plus the stage design is just as fabulous as O’s pools and the vertical stuff is amazing in a way that the water stunts in O didn’t quite (for me) reach.
I’ve seen Ka’, O, Mystere, Love, and Zumanity in Vegas, plus Saltimbanco and Varekai on the road. O and Ka’ are definitely my two favorites. Ka’ definitely has the most narrative structure, and the least Circus atmosphere. I will definitely see it again.
I’ve never had any interest in seeing Chris Angel, and to be honest, Zumanity is the only Cirque show that left me with a sense of ‘Meh.’ (I guess I found the risqué approach to be distracting, but not naughty enough to be titillating. To each his own - particularly in Vegas).
My own opinion is probably not that useful. Live shows/theater/musicals just don’t do that much for me. Just a genre that doesn’t resonate.
I spent more time marveling at HTF they got that stage to go vertical all transformer-style with dudes falling off and whatnot. Engineering for the win.
Course, I was coming from like a five hour stint at the tables, and was pleasingly buzzed.
I enjoyed it well enough, but wouldn’t rave about it.
