IMO, shoestring fries are usually better after they’ve been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile and have had a chance to go limp. My favorite fast food fries come from Dick’s, whose whole gimmick is “Instant Service” where they offer a small menu with no special orders and everything is always ready to go before you step up to the counter. Those kind of fries also tend to be more edible after reheating in the microwave, as opposed to super-crispy McDonald’s fries which become irredeemably inedible about 5-10 minutes after coming out of the fryer.
My memory was 90s, if we’re talking the starch spray on fries. I actually like them better than the crap fries they had before. But I know my opinion is unpopular. They very well may have made further “new” fries since.
I haven’t tried them, no. But I’m surprised at the hate for Burger King fries. As I think I mentioned elsewhere, I had not been to BK for many years (likely well over 10 years) because the nearby place was filthy and badly managed and my last burger there tasted gamey, like either the beef was off or it wasn’t even really beef. But a few months ago, while waiting to give somebody a ride, I popped over to BK in the area, which was just up the street. I was surprised at the nice grilled taste of the Whopper, and have indulged once in a while ever since. Anyway, the point of all this is that I also like their fries. They’re typically crispy and flavourful and way better than McDonald’s. Wendy’s fries, the last I had them (before they became “new and improved”) were OK – better than McDonald’s, but unexceptional.
I liked those wedges.
Up here, you can find those wedges in the hot case at any supermarket deli. They’re called “jojos” for some reason that I have been trying to discern to no avail ever since I moved here.
Right back atcha, doll!
I remember Burger King changing their fries and it is why I have almost never gone to Burger King since (maybe five times in 25+ years or whatever it is). I do not eat at fast food joints very often but McDonalds fries are so, so much better so if I have choice McDonalds will win every time over Burger King.
I have not had Wendy’s new fries but I am pretty sure I’ll dislike them just as much. I simply do not want any coating on my fries. Plain fries with salt is perfect. If you really want to live on the edge maybe a flavored salt. Then, dipping sauce of your choice (or none).
I read some reviews (mixed) and more than one article about the reasoning behind the change; so they’ll keep better.Pssssshaw. I know I’m in the minority (here, anyway) but I’m not terribly bothered about fries being super hot and I sure as hell don’t want them crispy. That’s what chips are for.
I like 'em cold and soggy, dammit!
I thought the ads were kind of cute, though.
23498% of people prefer our new fries over McDonald’s. If you need to resort to peer pressure, they’re probably not that great.
Maybe it was a slow rollout. But if I remember right, you’re in the Chicagoland area too. And that’s why I’m a little confused. Because I remember the exact suburban BK that was advertising the new and improved fries and I didn’t move to the area until 2001.
ETA: It was the one in Downers Grove on Lemont Rd.
Aside… why hasn’t someone taken “Anal Leakage” as a screen name?
Yours will still be my fave.
I find it more useful as a password.
A little trick for fast food I learned over 50 years ago from a teenage neighbor who worked at the local Jack in the Box.
Always order fries with No Salt. You can add your own. That way the fries they serve you will be fresh and hot never having spent a long time under the heat lamp.
Also, for pre-prepared burgers (like McDonald’s, etc.) always ask for something somewhat special – like only ketchup and pickle to insure you get a hot and fresh burger.
I’ve heard that it is better just to state that you are willing to wait for fresh fries. Most fast food workers are fine with that. But if you ask for no salt, then you might be making the workers prep/clean a salt free area to dump the fries.
A Pizza Chain called them that, Shakeys? Are they defunct?
Those are called mojos and I learned here that there are still Shakey’s around, but not around me, dammit. Also, they’re oval due to being cut widthwise (why yes, I did work at a Shakey’s for two summers.)
Right, thanks- so I assume a take off on that name?
I go to Wendy’s more than any other fast food chain. I like their sandwiches, as a whole, better than anywhere else, even if somewhere else may have my favorite single item. (plus, the McDonald’s on base where I work was replaced with a Wendy’s 3 years ago, and mid-/post-pandemic, the base cafeterias have closed so Wendy’s is basically the only game in town, and that location is mobbed 24/7)
All I can really tell you is the new fries are definitely an improvement over the previous iteration. Did not care for the previous recipe at all. The new ones are way better.
I’ll take Five Guys fries over any other fast food chain although they are expensive considering they are just fries.
So, I take it you prefer a crispier fry?
