I’m piddling with it. I’m not entirely happy with how the default version looks. Hopefully I’ll be able to find a suitable skin. I’m not sure if it’s a glitch in the software, or there’s some setting that I need to fix, but I’ve found that a doing a right click in the address bar doesn’t allow me to cut or paste a URL. Still, it’s a darn sight better than IE.
Tuckerfan,
I downloaded Opera 7 to run alongside Opera 6.05 that I use normally and I have to admit that I’ve not been too impressed with it so far. To me, it may just be a personal feeling more than anything else, but I think it runs slower than 6.05. Also, like you, I am not too fond of the new look, especially the new ‘tabs’. I always run Opera with the page tabs at the bottom of the window but since the new ones look like real file tabs it makes it look pretty odd. Still the look is pretty easily altered with the wide range of skins out there (at least for 6.05) so I’m hoping when the final version comes out there will be a good range of decent skins to pick from.
I’m going to stick with 6.05 for the moment, I’ve been using Opera for ages in preference to IE or Netscape but I’ll wait to see if they solve some of the little niggles I see with 7 before I upgrade.
I was running 7beta for a few days when it crashed on me, and now whenever I open it, it asks if I wantr to start where I was, or with no windows or whatever, I pick none, and it crashes again…even after I uninstall/reinstall it…
otherwise, though, I like the new option of letting requested popups through…
For some reason, it doesn’t seem to let you save the windows you have open before you exit. I’ve told it to prompt before exiting, but it doesn’t do that. It just shuts down. Very annoying. I like having Opera set to open all the forums at the SDMB when it loads.
I tried it out for a little while but I didn’t like it. Most of my objections come from the appearance. By the time, they release the final version, there should be more skins available. I’m going to keep using Opera 6.05.
I use Mozilla primarily, but I have the Opera 7 beta and have to say that the rendering engine has improved a lot since 6.
Just discovered this: You can now read spoiler tags!!! See, it works! You can even use it to highlight text done in white to read it!
You can read spoiler tags in Opera 6.05, too.
Yeah, but it 7 you can read it like normal people by highlighting 'em and not having to do the whole page toggle thingie!
Well, something new everyday, I didn’t know that 7 supported highlighting the spoiler boxes instead of having to turn the graphics off and on again.
Thanks Tuckerfan!
<mutter> still think it’s slower though <mutter>
Yar. The new tab design bugs me, too. I prefer the 6.05 semi-taskbar down at th’bottom. I also don’t like the fact that the Transfers window doesn’t open automatically for downloads–for me, anyway. I also also don’t like the bit where I haven’t been able to rearrange the folders on my personal bar. I can rearrange the individual bookmarks, but not the folders. I don’t like this because either a) it’s silly that Opera 7 doesn’t allow it, or b) I’m going to look like an idiot when someone tells me how.
I decided to give it another go and it’s growing on me. I found a skin which is less painful on the eyes than the original skin. I played around with the settings and moved the page bar to the bottom like it was on Opera 6.
The rendering engine is better and the program seems to work a lot better with sites like hotmail than Opera 6 did. It is a little slower than the older version but it is still quicker than either Mozilla or IE.
The only drawback is that the damn thing seems more likely to crash than the old one did.
Well, this sucks. We were having crashing problems with Opera 6 on both our computers. I upgraded both to 6.05, which fixed mine, but Mr. S has still been crashing. I went to the Opera forums and found that most people seemed to have fixed the problem by switching to the 7 beta. So I downloaded the installer and was about to run it on Mr. S’s machine when I came upon this thread.
Nuts. Now what?
OK, I just took the plunge and installed the Opera 7 beta on Mr. S’s laptop. Surfed around for a while and it didn’t crash. I’ll let him play with it for a few days and see how it works for him. He’s not a power user by any means, but he would sure like to have a noncrashing browser!
It does seem a little slower than 6 or 6.05, but then again I rarely use that 700-Mhz laptop – I’m used to my 1.1-Ghz desktop. But I need this machine’s browser to be reliable, because I use it for work, so I’m not going to fix what ain’t broke over here.
I downloaded it. Once I figured out how to get the mailto: links to work properly (copy the [Mail] section from the 6.05 ini), and other than the occasional crash, I really well… errr don’t notice much difference other than flashy new chrome (which clashes horribly with my tan/red color scheme at work).
Well, with all you beta testers out there, I’ll kinda kick back and wait until the formal release.
I will expect no problems because of your efforts.
Thanks, folks!
