Anyone and Everyone

Last night on MPT (PBS), I caught most of a documentary called Anyone and Everyone. It deals with parents of lesbian and gay people, and how they reacted when their children came out. Most of what I saw dealt with how they had to reconcile their church’s teachings on homosexuality.

I began to cry at a few points in the film. Granted, I’m not the most stoic person around, but it was still very heart touching.

One in particluar: A young man came out to his mother. Mom and Dad were preparing for a trip, and as they were on their way in the car, Mom related to Dad that their son was gay. Dad pulled over into a strip mall to find a phone. When Mom asked what he was doing, he said “I don’t want our son to worry even one more minute about what my reaction will be.”

Real tear-jerker, there.

This family’s church had always taught that gay is bad, lowest of the low, worse than a murderer or what have you. They remembered that their son is their son, that being gay doesn’t make him a bad person.

Has anyone seen this film?
