Anyone else check out The Unusuals?

Just watched the first episode, and I think I’m really gonna enjoy this show. It’s yet another NYPD homicide show, but with a lot of dark humor thrown in. And as the title implies, the detectives on the show investigate some pretty unusual stuff…I’m just happy that all of the scenes and dialogue are authentic NYC.

Might watch but it seemed pretty usual to me.

My wife and I caught the premier. It wasn’t as great as we’d have hoped but it was good enough that we’re willing to let the show settle into itself and give it a while. First epsiodes are always about frantically trying to introduce everyone and set the scene and give history and yadda yadda all within 30-60 minutes.

I thought the story line with Adam Goldberg and Harold Perrineau was the most intriguing. One seems to be indestructible, the other is convinced he’ll die before his 43rd birthday. Some of the other characters were interesting enough for me to keep watching for at least a couple of episodes. I appreciated the dryish humor.

Hopefully they’ll get rid of that dispatcher and her throwaway gags. One a show maybe, but they really overdid it. Maybe do something the gag about the arguing sisters in matching sweaters in the first 10 minutes, then casually have them cross in the background near the end of the show. No need to keep coming up with one every segment. “The suspect may or may not have a samurai sword” was just flat out dumb.

We watched it, and while I wasn’t overwhelmed with joy, I’m willing to keep watching for a few weeks to see if I like it.

Yeah, they were the best part. Their storyline felt natural, while the rest of the humor seemed to be “Look how wacky and crazy these guys are!”

It was okay, but not nearly as unusual as advertised.

I watched it and didn’t like it. A lot of moving camera filming that I hate(Blair Witch syndrome) The story was also very jumpy going from case to case with random humor thrown in between each transition. Didn’t care for the characters they just went out of their way to make them odd beyond belief. The cases were not that unusual.

While the show was somewhat funny its cross between crime drama and sit calm fails to do well at either.

It was all right…I will give it a chance for a bit.

The ads struck me as “‘Barney Miller’ for the 21st Century”.

Kinda blaah. I do like seeing Amber Tamblyn again seeing Jeremy Renner finally in a starring role.

There’s two good reasons to watch it right there. I may have to check it out.

Hmmm. For those of us who have no idea what that means, what Barney Miller like beyond being a cop show?

In the premier we didn’t just se Amber Tamblyn, but Amber Tamblyn all tarted up. Probably not much more of that however.

I wonder if “42” is a nod to Lost (or Hitchhiker’s)

I was expecting less seriousness. I wonder if there will a “wacky case of the week” or not.

I’m willing to watch a few more episodes but not very thrilled.

It was okay. Having it replace the excellent “Life On Mars” was a mistake, IMO. It quite suffers by comparison.

Barney was surrounded by quirky officers who dealt with unusual situations. The series premiere featured a drug addict holding the precinct hostage. They’ve chased suspects across rooftops while high on hash and through sewers. Inside the detectives’ room, they’ve dealt with an 80-year-old mugger, a college student’s home-built atomic bomb, a guy with a dynamite belt, a guy who claims to have a poltergeist following him, etc.

Sorry for the double posts, guess that’s what happens when one tries to edit an edit after it timed out.

Well, week two. Excuse my vague character descriptions since I don’t have anyone’s name down. No spoilers in the post either (assuming you’ve at least seen the first episode).

I like the Amber Tamblyn & What’s-His-Name pairing more than I probably should. But they work for me which is good since you see a lot of 'em.

I like Mustache & Vest pairing for the B plots as well. Since their stories are a little more “out there” than our above couple, I think they work best as the subplot so you’re not overloaded with their weirdness.

I’m tired of Religious Cop. I can’t imagine a plot resolution where he sticks around so I hope he goes away soon. I don’t want to watch him snivel through every episode.

Go-Getter Cop & Fiesty Latina Cop are pretty forgettable. As is Astronaut Captain.

Tonight’s episode was pretty good (and they seemed to have toned down Wacky Dispatch Voice) although the show would be better named “The Mildly Unusuals”. I mean, their cases are slightly askew but not enough to carry the show on that premise. I think in another couple episodes I’ll either be watching the show purely based on an interest in the A & B cop pairings or else abandoning it. I certainly won’t be watching based on the slightly unusual crime situations. I guess it’s a balancing act between interesting and realistic but right now they’re leaning far enough towards realistic to just be kind of bland.
