I have no desire to look a gift horse in the mouth, and I’m not expecting any admin or mod to reply to this post anytime soon. They clearly have other immediate priorities. I just want to know if anyone else if having similar problems.
My computer has 64 meg RAM, and I use Win98SE. I have a DSL connection that seems to be working properly on other sites. Yet it is taking a full minute or so for a page to open after I click on a link.
Anyone want to commiserate or have any suggestions? Thanks.
IIRC, Anthracite mentioned that all things being equal, the new vBulletin will be a tad slower than the old one. So, unless they did some hardware/software/network tweaks, I would expect it to be no faster than it used to be, especially on it’s first day back.
I wonder how ARS Technica does it? Their board has many more members than this one, and the board itself is speedy at any time of the day or night - I don’t notice any slowdown during peak hours.
They recently upgraded their software too, and for a time they had the numbers of people browsing the boards current. During the day it was around 1400-1500 currently browsing at any one time. So how do they accomodate so many and still stay speedy?
I don’t know about you all, but my slowness has dissipated as the day’s gone on. Early this morning (CST) it was so slow as to render the board unusable – pages took several minutes to load, if at all. Right now, I’m blazing through posts with all the speed of the temporary board and more – much, much better than the old board.
I think that the main difference between Ars Technica and here is that they have money, and we (for the most part) don’t. Ars gets advertising and sponsorship-type income from a variety of computer companies (largely hardware manufacturers, who want their stuff reviewed, I understand), and their subscription system has been in place for several months now, while all we (currently) have is the altruism of an alternative newspaper in Chicago. We’ll see if things change once the SDMB gets a revenue stream.
Today I found the board to be faster than the old one, when it was working. But at some times it was completely inaccessible no matter how long I waited.
I’d attribute it all – the varying speed, the inaccessibility, the crazy options that were available earlier this morning – to the fact that the new board is brand-new and call it growing pains. I imagine over the next few days we’ll get a better idea of just how speedy the new board is gonna be.
Remember last year when the Board got so abysmally slow it kept timing out for everybody? Remember how they identified the problem as too many searches putting a drag on the server’s resources? Remember how they restricted the search so you could only search one forum at a time, and Dopers willingly surrendered the global search in the interest of getting the Board to run?
We’re doing the best we can with what we’ve got and demand always outstrips supply and never more so than now.
Your patience is appreciated. More than that, it’s really a necessity. A better situation is on the way but we’re some time and distance and equipment away from resolution of our problems. Or at least THIS one, anyway.
