Anyone else finish FarCry 2?

Having finished Fallout 3, I decided to finish FarCry 2, which I’d put on hold for a wee bit on account of work, FO3’s awesomeness, and the fact that one or two things in FC2 were beginning to grate on my nerves.

I’ll say here that I really liked the ending itself; I thought it fit in really well with the game and the nature of warfare in Africa in general.

As far as I’m concerned, if your character takes the “Bribe The Border Guards” option, they survive- figuring that since everyone else has double-crossed them and the Jackal undoubtedly has no plans of blowing himself up, your character isn’t going to shoot themselves- especially since no-one else cares about the country (as revealed by the fact Reuben can’t get his stories published in any of the papers he works for and has to resort to posting them on his blog). No, your character walks away from the conflict an extremely rich and well-armed person, albeit with Malaria, which is nothing Modern Medical Science can’t sort out.

The constantly respawning enemies at roadblocks, teleporting Technicals, warring factions that neglect to tell their own troops you’re working for them (and don’t seem to notice you working for their opposition), and that fact you could unload an SMG into someone at point-blank range and not kill them did annoy me, but overall I enjoyed the game and really felt like I was involved in the middle of a conflict in a nameless African country. As I’ve said before, it felt like a cross between Blood Diamond and The Dogs of War.

I did, however, start to wonder towards the end of the game what was stopping my character from just gunning down everyone who opposed him and taking charge of the country (it’s implied the country is too wrecked to function, but even so). I’d lost count of the bodycount by that stage, and my character had access to an arsenal rivalling that of some first-world countries, so deciding to stage a coup d’etat and install myself as El Presidente really didn’t seem to be any more far-fetched than roadblocks full of baddies that would respawn as soon as you turned your back and walked six feet away.

I like the fact that, by the end of the game, you were at least as bad as- if not worse than- The Jackal, having personally ensured the country was fucked up beyond any hope of repair- blowing up medicine, destroying fresh water supplies, starting bushfires, and generally causing even more chaos than the man who was simply supplying guns to everyone. It certainly gave the game a lot more depth as I came to realise this, I felt.

So, has anyone else finished the game? What did you think of it all?

Anyone? The game’s been hugely popular; I can’t be the only one on the boards who has finished it…

Yup I finished it on the hardest possible difficulty (which was, in fact, quite hard. I did a lot of quicksaving and quickloading but I ultimately beat it).

There was way too much driving around, and the respawning at roadblocks as you mentioned got pretty tedious. I generally like games that have driveable vehicles and don’t think it’s necessarily out of place in an FPS, but when you spend way more time driving than you do shooting, that’s out of place in an FPS.

It also made me realize my computer is getting out-of-date. I had to play it on the lowest possible graphics settings and even then was lucky to get 30 FPS, and any time there were fire effects around that number tanked. :frowning:

I suppose I’ll eventually finish it. Honestly, I find it a little boring. The graphics are really nice and I find myself able to do some nice work with the flamethrower. I’m just a little bored of the “drive an hour here, kill this guy, drive an hour back.” storyline.

I’m guessing that the first mod that comes out once the Developer Kit is released will be to disable the respawning at the checkpoints; which will make travel a lot less tedious, IMHO…

Oh, my game is eternally resting at some place where I’m escorting a scientist and there are 150 snipers, oh, somewhere around here. . oh, there’s another one, somewhere behind me? Load game, again?. . . , and the scenario is just no longer calling tome as strongly as it once did. I suspect I’ll finish Black first, after Fallout.

Wait, there is a mission other than “travel to this spot and kill/blow up this”?

Are we talking about the same game? I’ve played right through FarCry 2 and there are no escort missions anywhere in the game, AFAIK, except the Buddy Missions where you have to go and bail your Buddy out of a situation involving lots of people with guns shooting at both of you.

What I’ll say, without spoiling anything, is that you might as well ignore the buddy missions for the game; they don’t give you any real benefit and ultimately don’t count for anything in the end.

Well, in this scenario (from what I recall-- it’s been months since I touched it)

I’ve just sprung this scientist guy who I think has been giving me funny injections, from some sort of place he’s been, and we’re supposed to get from there to some other place, and we’re being shot at, and if he dies I think I go back to the moment I sprung him (not sure on this-- I don’t think I can let him die), and he mostly cringes and hides in a duck-and-cover position in his labcoat with his doctor’s bag, until he runs on up ahead of me and snuffs it. Sound familiar?

I think you’re confused with a different game, I’m afraid. Nothing like that happens in FarCry 2; there aren’t any scientists or escort missions in the game.

Perhaps you’re thinking of the original FarCry? It’s been ages since I’ve played it but that certainly had scientists in it. FarCry 2 is set in Africa, you play a mercenary tracking down an Arms Dealer and causing a lot of havoc in the process.

Count me as one who got about 10 hours into the game, stopped for a while and have yet to go back.

I kept waiting for something else to happen. Ooh! A new mission! Oh - go kill so-and-so over there. OK. Oooh! I need to find more malaria medicine! Oh- it’s guarded by so-and-so over there. Go kill him to get your medicine.

The game looks incredible - I love the changing weather and natural day-night cycle. But after I’ve cleaned out the same guard post six times I started getting bored. Yes, the buses can get you where you want to go, but not always.

I suppose I’ll go back to it at sometime, because it’s not like I have to figure out where I left off in the storyline or anything.

Ah, I must be thinking of the original one, which is on a tropical island. . . Ok, yeah, It’s Far Cry Instinct. So I’m two or three years behind the times. Ugh. Sorry, and thanks for your patience.
