Anyone else here have Loot Crate delivered monthly? And a FAQs for those who don't know what it is.

So I just recently learned about Loot Crate. Let me tell those who don’t yet know what it is or have yet to hear about it what it entails (I just learned about it myself a week or two ago and I LOVE the idea behind it)

It’s basically: You pay a certain amount monthly (it’s, like, 10-20 dollars…so… NOT MUCH, at least in my opinion, although there are more expensive box plans they have) and, every month, you get sent a box/package in the mail (a “Loot Crate”, hence the name).
This box will be filled with lots of random stuff and all of it will be geeky-type stuff based on things like Doctor Who, LotR, Star Wars, comic book heroes, video games, popular movies and shows…all kinds of things! Little knickknacks, posters, shirts, socks, a treasure trove of many random things, literally. And you get one of these EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH. How awesome is that?

And each month has a few different themes. Anywhere from two to five. You get things based on these themes. Last month’s themes were Labyrinth, Vikings, Harry Potter, and Uncharted. Before that it was Daredevil, Star Trek, and Batman VS Superman. Before that is was Hulk, Warcraft, and Dragon Ball Z. Before that it was Deadpool and The Walking Dead. Before that it was X Files, Space Invaders, Aliens, and The Fifth Element. See what I mean?

They have different kinds of crates too, that you can get. Wearable Crates that have only things you wear in them (socks, hats, shirts, necklaces, etc), Gaming Crates that only give you stuff based on video games. They even have ones for your PET.

I think I’m definitely going to pay and get a few months worth to see how it is. Sounds extremely cool. I’ve already talked with some friends about this and a few tell me that sometimes the things aren’t so great, but sometimes there’s some really, really excellent things found in them. Some of the past stuff crates have had are wicked: Pogs, keychains, little figurines, bobbleheads, hats, t-shirts, pins, magnets, flashlights, props, comic books, socks with Zelda or Deadpool on them…all sorts of things.

So yeah, if you’re like me and had NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE, now you have. I wish I had known about this earlier, I’ve have been getting it for years now. I figure if anyone on here is like me and hadn’t even been aware of this thing, you have no excuse now. : p

I’m strongly considering getting the regular one and the wearable crate. On the site for it, it shows what has come in past boxes and some of the stuff that has come in the Wearable Loot Crates in the past have been epic. Do want.
So anyone here already getting crates monthly or were subscribed in the past? Anyone have a review or opinion on them? Anyone hearing about this for the first time and–much like myself–planning to get on ordering ASAP? Heh.

I’ve never used it nor heard of it until now, but I’m having trouble imagining how it wouldn’t be a bunch of disappointing crap that you overpaid for.

I really never thought “shopping” (==my god, I have to go find something to spend this money on) could be topped, but I guess “subscription boxes” (==please take my money in exchange for something, anything!) have done it.

I have a friend who gets it and she likes it. She has cash to spare and enjoys the surprise.

My wife used to get a box full of organic health food. The portions were quite small. It was pretty obviously just an advertising gimmick for the brands to get exposure. She did not stick with it long. I’ve seen some that fit my interests, but I really don’t see the point of paying for random stuff I may not like.

It sounds like it might be a good way to accumulate a collection, assuming the choices made for you are good. If they are only advertising giveaways, not so much.

There was once a similar scheme that would mail you every 45 (or 33) record that entered the top 10 Billboard list every week. For a price a little less than what you would pay for the same records at a store, you could be assured of never missing one in the top 10 – quite a timesaver if you are a collector. I think it was designed for radio stations, but anyone could subscribe. Of course, you would know what you were getting and it wouldn’t be a crapshoot like the Loot Crate idea.

I got a 3-month subscription to Kawaii Box for my 9-year-old daughter for Christmas last year. She thought it was the best thing ever. She still talks about it and asks when can she get it again. I’ll do it for Christmas again this year.

I got the Nerd Block Jr. subscription box for my 12-year-old son. I thought it was pretty good. He was not very impressed, but then again he is not big into merch unless it has to do with whatever his particular obsession is at any given time. So lesson learned.

I think if you like “stuff”, Loot Crate and the like are great. I look and them and think “what cool stuff!” and then I think “then I would have even more stuff that I have no room for.”

More ideas for geeky subscription boxes

I have too much crap (fun crap, but still crap) in my home and in my office, so I don’t need someone sending me more on a regular basis.

Can you specify size and gender? Like I don’t want an extra small pink Hello Kitty shirt. That shit better be large and black or rainbow because I am a man dammit.

Big Marketing strikes again!

My brother started getting Loot Crate, I think. He gets some sort of nerd box every month. There are more than just LootCrate now…I see them come up all the time on my Facebook mobile as ads and also as “your friend likes…”

Last month he gave me a little Mario-world-pipe-shaped planter that I am using as a cupholder in my Mario-world-decorated bathroom. He signed up because he’s hoping to get some rare Doctor Who stuff.

I’m a 30-something geek so I’m the right target audience for this sort of thing but I just don’t have a need for that amount of or sort of stuff. I don’t really want posters, I want art (that I buy). I don’t need or use keychains, or socks or shirts in the wrong size.

I am not against subscription boxes though  I have friends who do snack boxes, makeup boxes, clothing boxes and I personally do BarkBox for my dogs. And of course I am not against getting my brother’s leftover stuff from his geek box!

Think of it this way. It’s a great way to build up the inventory for your next garage sale.

Our dogs have a subscription to Bark Box (although I get the bill:dubious:).

They love it.

It’s the cat’s meow, right?

Just make sure you don’t get a bobcat.

I had a subscription to Stitch Fix, which is a service that sends clothing. It worked pretty well for me because I’m in dire need of a wardrobe update but hate to shop. I cancelled it recently because we are cutting spending, but plan to go back to it in future.

Is there a list of all of the subscription box services?

Yes but you have to subscribe to it.

We get both Loot Crate and Pet Crate. Lots of fun stuff. I now have shirts of every aspect of nerd-dom. So do my cats.

Some of the stuff is dross, but a lot of it is exclusive to Loot Crate. For collectors of nerdity, they are quite a treat. They also randomly give out Mega-crates, which can include full gaming computers, one-of-a-kind sculptures and stuff like that. I’ve gotten a mini-mega-crate for my selection before. Tres kewl.

My 14 year old son and all of his friends get Loot Crate. He gets a couple of little plastic pieces of crap each month that are just collecting dust, but he loves and wears the T-shirts and socks.

The benefit to me is that he has a monthly debt of $20ish that he needs to work off.

If I had a child at home I bet I’d do it. I’m at the point now where I’m trying to get rid of half of what I own, so I won’t be subscribing.
