Subscription boxes

In this thread even sven mentions several clothing subscription boxes. I haven’t tried those, but we had Nature Box for a while, which is healthy snacks. And I did a few months of Birch Box, which is sorta weird because I’m not that into makeup. But there’s something so fun about getting a monthly surprise in the mail!

So, what have you tried? Have you liked it?

I signed up for Stitch Fix a week or so ago after reading an article about it. I’m really hoping it works; I looooove the idea of getting clothes delivered to me that I like. I hate shopping, don’t need to dress up much, but do like the idea of having cute stuff just magically show up.

Now I gotta go check out Golden Tote and see what they’re like.

I read about subscription boxes in Consumer Reports’ “Shop Smart” magazine, and signed up for the box that was done by Wal Mart, presumably as a way for them to test out new snacks and treats before they hit the store. First I was told there was a waiting list then I was told that the whole program was cancelled.

No treats :frowning:

I didn’t really see anything else on their subscription list that appealed to me, for the price.

I do think the purse and jewelry subscription services would be really awesome and worth it, if I did purses or jewelry. Much more my speed than purchasing outright and I would be able to keep up with styles because they’d make me!

I can report that I just got my first box of this experiment, from Wantable Intimates box. They provide underwear, hosiery and loungewear. This one has consistently good reviews and tends to be a good value, so I thought I’d try it. It cost $36.00 for 4-5 items. Apparently is has amazing shipping speed.

I got a pair of blue sweater tights. They are cute and cozy, but I don’t have much to wear them with right now. I got a really cute undie/camisole set that I already love. It’s good quality and fills a need. Finally, I got a cute pair of undies.

I’m happy with the box. I didn’t find it an amazing value (I think the price I paid was right on point), but it’s all stuff I’ll use and it came right to my door without my having to think about it. If I keep this up for a few months, I should have a pretty fresh daily lingerie drawer.

As a hint for those interest in Golden Tote, they open the sale sometime in the beginning of the month, and larger sizes sell out quickly. It’s with keeping an eye out on their social media feeds to know when it opens. Apparently demand is currently huge and they are still coping with that. They sometimes restock some items, if they can get a larger supply, so it can be kind of tricky to know what to choose or when to buy.

I’ll keep you guys posted as to how the rest turn out.

Was that Goodies? I signed up for it and got a couple of boxes, but the second box was nasty healthy stuff, so that put me off a bit. Then I added up how much it cost per item, and it cost too much for the small amount you get. That was the end of Goodies for me. Now I gotta buy my junk food at the grocery store, like common people.

I tried Birch Box with a prepaid subscription for a year, and it was ok. I wasn’t unhappy, but I wasn’t exactly jumping for joy either. Most months were meh. I didn’t renew.

Being a Sephora Rouge member gets me invites and presents, like the Bobbi Brown launch party where I got a free $75.00 palette before the product release. You also get free unlimited complimentary services, an extra Birthday gift, free shipping, advance access to certain products before their release date and classes with product and brand founders. I easily spend the $1,000.00 a year minimum to qualify, usually closer to $2,500.00. It’s not a monthly box, but you do get 3 samples per order and a couple of orders per month plus a 100 point sample is basically a Birch Box.

The box I buy faithfully every month is the Julep full polish box. It runs around $45 for 9 polishes; all new shades, some exclusives and all before they are released in stores. For about $5 each, it’s a great deal because the polishes sell for about $14 each in stores. You also get access to the online warehouse sale before the public and a secret store and discount pricing on the website. They have boxes starting at $20.00, I just go for the upgrade. Plus you get points to cash in for free items or boxes, and it adds up very quickly.

I thought I would love Eco Emi from the products in the reviews, but my boxes were never like those boxes. I would get a one use detergent sample, a half size energy bar and three tea bags. For $15.00. All the reviews were Awesome Awesome Awesome, but my boxes were the leftovers for poor relations. I ended up with a couple of nice lip balms and a soy candle eventually, but nothing ever made up the cost of the box. Very disappointing because I was really wanting to love it.

I love my Julep box. $20 for 3 or 4 nail polishes. If you get the upgrade the price per polish is even less. I see LurkerInNJ likes Julep, too. So much fun!

I just got the first Stitch Fix box.

It’s good and bad; on the one hand, everything fits, which is a big plus in my book! I always have trouble with sizes, and I was wondering if they’d be able to figure it out.

The stuff:

  • one pair skinny black “jeans”. These are more or less leggings. They fit and are comfortable, but I’m 1) not sure when I’d wear them, 2) not all that keen on skinny jeans and 3) they’re black and I have 2 dogs. So I’ll probably send them back. The are more or less like this, but I do not look like the waifs who are modelling them!

  • a couple blouses I’m not thrilled with. Here’s one. I like it better in the pic than on me - that’s not really my color, and it feels REALLY tent-ish on me. I actually like it in the pic more than in real life. I’ll try it on again, but thinking I’ll send it back.

I can’t find a pic of the other blouse. It’s (once again) really tentish, and though the colors are better (blue!), I’m not fond of the fabric, which reminds me of polyester.

  • This dress that I don’t really like much and I never wear dresses. Going back.

  • a kind neat cardigan that’s all drape-y. This chick has one in blue (! Why didn’t they send ME blue?!?) Mine is gray. I like it, I think I’ll keep it.

Update: I might keep more than I expected to keep. Tried everything on for Mr. Athena, who is almost impossible to please, clothing-wise. My typical clothes shopping experience with him is that I come home with a bunch of clothes, try them on for him, and he hates all of them. After I wear them a few times, he comes around, and then tells me he likes them, but it’s almost a universal truth Chez Athena that we have to go through a warming-up period for any non-jeans or t-shirt clothes purchases I make.

Not this time. He looooooves the skinny jeans, and both blouses. He says they’re NOT tent-ish, and that they emphasize the parts of me that should be emphasized. He says the skinny jeans + flow-y blouses make me look six feet tall and muscly. Holy shit, that’s a look I can get into!

The only thing he really didn’t like was the dress, so we’re in agreement on that one. On the other hand, it’s actually going to be cheaper for me to keep it than send it back (there’s a discount if you keep everything) so maybe I’ll try to sell it on eBay or something.

Nice!

I got a package from Splendies. Three pairs of undies- one sheer white lace boy short, one sporty bikini with colorful stripes, and one frilly black lace pair. All are cute, and a good excuse to throw out three pairs of my old holey undies. They do run on the small size.

Ok, I’m signing up for Stitch Fix! I hope it like it.

I’m also getting a free sample box of Graze. I’ll let you know if it’s any good.

I’ve forgotten the name but I used to subscribe to a monthly box of makeup products back in the 80’s . I still remember a Diane von Furstenburg compact lipgloss I got. Does anyone else remember?

I got my first Stitch Fix today, and it’s great. Here’s what I got:

  • Dark Navy skinny jeans. Love them. I’m just getting into skinny jeans, and these look great
  • A giant black purse with chain handles. Not my style at all - going back
  • Turquoise drapey cardigan (I sense a pattern). Not sure - it feels cool to wear, and I think it looks good on me, but that may just be because it’s in style. It’s something I would never even glance at in the store, and it’s $58, which seems crazy to me.
  • A wrap dress with a blue, white and black pattern - love it, and totally keeping it
  • A black and white blouse with crocheted accents and no sleeves. Going back - I hate tented waistlines, because I look like a whale.

So, yeah, I totally love this. It’s like getting a present, and the clothes are quality. They did okay with styles for me, and you can provide lots of feedback so they presumably tailor your next box based on your comments.

The only caution for me is the prices - if I kept the whole thing I’d pay $294 (and that’s with a 25% discount). I’m having a bit of a heart attack about paying $88 (!!!) for a pair of jeans, but I’m trying to get used to the idea that if you only dress in KMart clothes, you look like you’re dressed in KMart clothes all the time. It’s hard, because I was raised very frugally. But, I think its worth it as I get older - I am a professional, and I want to look good.

Does anyone have a comment on their second box? I’m curious about if they seemed to have taken any of your feedback into account.

I’m still waiting for my first Stitch Fix box. It should be here in a couple weeks. I wish it were sooner. Glad to hear you liked most of yours.

I’ve gotten 2 boxes from Graze, and just cancelled my subscription. The first one was free, so I felt like I should pay for one. It’s not a great value for the money ($6), although the snacks were tasty. I just think I can get similar things at Trader Joe’s for less. I mean, the whole box is less than 5 oz. total!

I subscribe to a couple

  1. Hello Makana is a monthly gift box of Hawaiian treats. They can include food items, art, music, soaps and lotions. We started it as a way to have a little monthly reminder of our favorite vacation and now we alternate opening the box each month. It’s a midmonth present to us.
  2. We are now in month 2 of Bark box. We get 1-2 toys and 2-4 packages of treats every month for less money than we normally spend on dog treats. They’ve all exceeded my standards for dog treats. I just don’t give them stuff that’s primarily filler. Everything that’s been in the Bark box so far is organic, human grade ingredients, seriously I don’t feed myself this well. One warning if you’re spam adverse do not sign up for their emails. Scout the mascot is cute but I now get an email about every single cute dog video that is ever posted.

If you’re interested in the bark box you can PM me for a referral code - you get $5 off your first month and I get my subscription extended for a month.

My second one is on its way to me, scheduled to be here Monday. I’ll let you know!

So I got the second box. I don’t like it as much as the first box, but it’s still good. I asked for stuff that would be good in my upcoming trip to France & Belgium, and the stylist attempted to do that.

What I got:

  • A pair of pink skinny jeans. Uh, no. Pink? Not me. Also, they were at least a size too small, so no need to even make a decision, and at $88, I would have had to loooove them.

  • The blouse pictured here. I like it and Mr. Athena says it’s extremely flattering on me. Will probably keep it, though at $54 I think it’s a little pricey.

  • This top. I’m so-so on it, Mr. Athena says it looks pretty good. Not sure about black as it collects dog hair, and $58 seems high.

  • This dress. I reaalllly like this dress. As it, I’d like to put it on and wear it around the house like I was 8 years old and playing princess. That said, I don’t have a great need for a dress like this, and $88 ain’t cheap. I am tempted to keep it for my trip; I’ll probably need at least one thing I can wear out that’s a little dressy. However, I don’t know if it would go with flats, and I’m trying to pack light and a pair of heels that I will only wear once or twice at the most won’t cut it. I’m not sure this dress would look decent with flats. Maybe sandals, but I’m not sure I can count on it being sandal weather.

  • a pair of drop earrings that I can’t find a picture of that I looove, and at $34 seems priced right. Will definitely keep.

So overall, this fix wasn’t as great as the last. Love the earrings, pants don’t fit and are pink, not sure I need a dress though I love it, and the blouses are a toss-up, I’m going to give myself a few days to think about them. I’ll definitely be trying stitch fix again, but I think I’m going to wait until the end of June/beginning of July.

One thing that really sticks out - the 25% discount for buying everything really brings things down into what I would consider a decent price range. I wish I could get it without buying everything!

I haven’t done a clothing/accessory box, but I did sign up for OyatsuBox, which delivers Japanese snacks monthly. There are other more popular Japanese snack boxes, but this one ships to Canada. It’s pretty darn awesome! I’ve only gotten my first month and I wish they did a little more chocolate instead of savory, but I’m quite happy.

Just got my first order from BirchBox and thought I’d give an update. I got an email from StitchFix with a little deal to try BirchBox, so I figured I’d give it a go.

BirchBox is a monthly box that costs $10, and is filled with health and beauty items. You fill out a profile that asks about your makeup/skincare/bath & body/eating preferences, your hair type, skin tone, etc. and they send you a box of samples every month that you will hopefully like.

I tried to fill it out so it downplayed makeup and instead skewed towards accessories, skincare, lotions, snacks, etc. and it seemed to work. What I got was:

  • a hotel-room sized bottle of Number 4 Shampoo
  • a small sample of Number 4 Conditioner in a foil envelope
  • a small bottle of Gilchrist & Soames body wash
  • a sampler of Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant fragrence
  • A Kind Healthy Grain bar (Maple Pumpkin Seed with Sea Salt)
  • a Sumita eyeliner pencil

Overall, definitely worth $10. I really like the shampoo & conditioner (in fact, a little too much - I’d like to buy some but it’s $30 a bottle!). The cologne could be worn by men or women, and it’s very nice. The Kind bar was immediately consumed and Mr. Athena and I both agreed we need to buy some of those for the house.

The only thing I’m not into is the eyeliner, as I don’t really wear makeup, but my niece is all over it so I’ll give it to her.

Recommended.

Birchbox generally skews more towards beauty products than makeup in general, but I think there’s usually one or two items each month.
