Given that this is a free webcomic, I recognize that I’m getting what I pay for and shouldn’t complain. And I wouldn’t complain, and wouldn’t have any expectations of it (like I do with a lot of other webcomics) except for the fact that the author announced awhile back that he was quitting his job to do the comic full-time. I can’t find his announcement because he changed his blog to Twitter at the beginning of the year, and when he switched back to the blog in April he didn’t post the old archives. All that being said:
How hard is it to get up a single 5-10 panel page in a week? A week! I should just stop checking, because it’s frustrating as hell to wait for the Sunday updates and have them never appear. But I like the comic, and want to keep reading. I just wish he’d get his act together.
It’s one of my favorites. The erratic updates are frustrating, but I keep pressing the button and hoping. Maybe it’s some kind of intermittent gratification experiment.
It’s been forever since there was a new Tempts Fate, too. Tempts Fate is such a cool way to solicit donations. If you haven’t checked it out, that might give you a temporary Goblins fix.
Yes, I’ve been reading it regularly. I have to say that THAC0 really, really knows how to hurt Goblinslayer…saying that Dellyn is only a random encounter! I sent a link to Chronos some time ago, and I know that he reads the comic now too.
I really can’t complain about the lack of updates. THunt is a daddy, and the comics take a LOT of time to draw and then color in. I think that I would be happier if we got more regular updates, even if it’s just a single page, but if THunt can’t force his Muse, then he can’t.
I would like to see what MinMax and the dwarven cleric are doing these days.
The blind ogre and his little mute buddy are just the most touching thing that I’ve read in a long while. I didn’t actually cry when they got back together, but I misted up a bit.
Yala (the mute lizard(?)) and Pan the Ogre have obviously made the best of a bad situation. Both have been mutilated by Dellyn, who is definitely Pure Evil, despite being a ranger. And it’s a case of the lame leading, or directing, the blind. They do seem to actually love each other, and not just depend on each other.
I think that the Death of Taps might be even mistier, though. For those who can’t remember what I’m talking about, Taps (named for his habit of tapping things with his stick) is blind, and he’s in the group of old and/or crippled goblins, when the group is found by a paladin. The paladin hunts Taps down, and kills him. The artwork is clearly meant to represent Taps’ world, only the physical objects that Taps touches is drawn in, and the rest of the panel is black. I didn’t like Taps, but I felt it was an effective story.
I am giving up on this comic as soon as they make it out of the city. It is just too slow.
OOTS has slowed down a lot too. Erfworld was really bad for awhile then seemed to pick up some. I hate slow comics.
I love Goblins!! But yeah, waiting for updates is a little maddening, especially after starting from the beginning and reading at my own pace for quite a while.
But even worse has been Scandal Sheet. The last update was in February. I may be wrong, but isn’t that done by someone who is or used to be a member here?
Scandal Sheet is done, or was done, by one of our former members, yes. He’s had a lot of stuff going on, but I’ve pretty much given up on the comic ever getting updated again. I read several other comics that link to SS, and occasionally I’ll click on the link, but I don’t expect to see an update.
I’m not that interested in finding out what RSS feeds are. I like checking every couple of days. It makes it like a little gift when a new comic appears.
My cup ranneth over one day last week when I got updates of Goblins, Order of the Stick and Breakfast of the Gods all on the same websurfing session.
You’re all a bunch of not very nice persons.
I spent most of the day reading the archives. The comic rocks more with every plot twist (with the lone exception of the demonic axe cum armor thing). And now I’ve caught up with the writer. And I want more. And there’s no more.
Another strip worth highlighting. What it means to be a Paladin. If anything could describe the ideal I try to aspire to in my own life, it’s the last panel.
Obviously, you need to look into Misfile, a comic about a girl who used to be a boy, another girl who has lost the last two years of her life, and the potsmoking angel who put them in this mess. Right now it’s updating every weekday.
Some of it is, yes. For instance, when they talk about hit points, and stabilizing when they’re in negative hit points, that’s very much D&D humor. It will make sense and be hilarious to D&D players. A big part of the humor is the way that the comic blends the game and real life, and smashes the fourth wall between the two. There’s at least one Tempts Fate (donation comic) arc that is probably making fun of MMORPGs, but I know enough about the genre to find it funny.
Oh, and I particularly love this Tempts Fate episode: Pirateninja!
I used to read it. I finally gave up when I realized the only thing that was slower then the updates was the plot.
After about 3-4 months I went back and checked and was shocked that a battle that had started just before I quit reading was STILL GOING ON. Jesus. At that point I gave up for good. That and the authors endless ‘oh I couldn’t update this week because I have to work in the real world…if only more people would donate’ crap got old. He just came off as greedy and whiny in his posts. I know he has to make it worth his while and don’t fault him for wanting to get paid he just brought it up too much.
