Anyone else the the crossover comic strips this morning?

I normally only read Get Fuzzy anymore, but for some reason my eyes glanced over the rest of the funny pages this morning. I was surprised to see Dagwood playing poker with Beetle Bailey in that strip. And over in Blondie it appeared that a couple of critters from Mutz were in Blondie’s laundry basket. Seems that the Dagwoods have a big anniversary (75th?) coming up. Those were the only two I noticed but I’m sure there are probably more. Anyone else see any?

Yesterday(?), a bunch of characters showed up at Dagwood & Blondie’s house in anticipation of the the anniversary party.

…and by “Dagwoods” I meant “Bumsteads” of course.

Rose Is Rose had Elmo delivering an invitation to Pasquale.

There are quite a few crossovers going on as part of the 75th Anniversary celebration of Blondie. Mark Evanier has been cataloguing them in his blog, along with all the other stuff he talks about there.

Hey, I’ve been a Get Fuzzy addict for a long while…really funny and weird.

As noted, the crossovers have been everywhere. It strikes me that Blondie has got to be the sexiest 95-year old woman in the Universe.

Blondie and Dagwood have been preparing for their 75th anniversary for the past month in the strip. The guests have just arrived, and Dagwood has been showing up in other comic strips handing out invitations. In September, they will celebrate their anniversary (and get a congratulatory phone call from G-Dubya himself!), then take a cruise to celebrate.

(As Mark Evanier pointed out, it’s the strip’s 75th anniversary, not the Bumsteads’-they didn’t marry until 1933. But still, a marriage like that lasting that long…)

You’ve added 20 years to her age there. But comics characters seem to stay young, that’s the glory of the medium. Nancy’s aunt Fritzi is 83, and she’s not that bad-looking either. But I will admit that Blondie is still attractive, and Dagwood is still in good shape, despite all those sandwiches he eats (although I think he should get his throat checked out- I think you’re supposed to say “z” when you snore, not “snxx-xx”).

This link should take you to today’s Blondie and change each day, if you want to follow what the Bumsteads are doing to prepare (since Mark isn’t providing a link to each day’s Blondie).

Thanks, mobo85! It’s really frustrating since we get all the strips except ‘Blondie’ in the papers around here.

Alice Mitchell also looks pretty good for her age. She must be past 70; she’s been appearing as Dennis’ mother since 1951.

I never thought about the actual age of the characters, I was just going by the age of the strip. Now that I think about it, other than Skeezix and some Peanuts characters, most comic characters didn’t start out as babies. (Garfield ages every year at the same age of the strip, even though he doesn’t look like a baby in his early strips- in fact, he’s much fatter.) Blondie could be well in her 90s, and Aunt Fritzi is probably well over 100. The Katzenjammer Kids is the longest-running comic strip in history, which premiered in 1897 and still runs each Sunday in some papers. They are still kids even though they probably should get a Guiness record for world’s oldest persons. The wonders of comic strips!

How could I have forgotten the Bumstead’s own kid, Alexander (a.k.a. Baby Dumpling)?

And The For Better or Worse kids, who have been aging in pretty good step with real time. Which makes me feel old (and a little nutty) when I think things like, “It seems like only yesterday that Elizabeth was still wearing diapers.”
