I asked this question in a D&D forum and some people said that the first few episodes reminded them of Gamma World 90210.
I think the first few episodes were a bit like that but this show (now in season 3) overall is really pretty dark. It has no problem torturing, maiming or killing main characters if it moves the plot along.
It has managed so far to keep the tension high in one form or another. I wonder if it can continue to do so, now that it seems that most of the various sides are known.
It really does remind me of the RPG Gamma World in that it is set in a post-apocalyptic world with factions, agendas and territories.
While some of the science is laughable, and there are some plot holes, I think the plot, pacing, fighting and most of the dialog are pretty good for the most part. The acting is not too bad either.
Just catching up to what has aired and I thought I’d chime back in.
The 100 is genuinely one of the better shows on TV right now. I binged all three of the first seasons(up to what has aired) and it is has been a great ride.
I love that there are no stand alones. Every episode is main arc and they do a great job keeping things moving. I actually am amazed how many people have died on the show, including countless major deaths.
I read about the show and decided to try it out. Fortunately I heeded the advice to plow ahead through the first 5-6 episodes of the first season because the show got better after that.
Yep. The first 5-6 episodes were awful (in my opinion). But it got better. I am slowly progressing and now am on episode 6 (?) of season 2. By the time I finish season 2, season 3 might be available on Netflix.
And yes, I like it too. I am a little surprised it doesn’t get more attention.
I watched the first episode and it was one of the worst shows i ever saw. I hear it got better, but the improvement would have to be massive for me to pick it up again.
I thought season 1 and 2 were good - but just couldnt keep up with season 3 and dropped - I understand the point of having 1 or 2 central chars, but I quit buying into caring about what happened to ‘special girl’ and ‘crazy guy (at the fancy house)’.
I think the story and some of the things they were headed for had some good potential, but I got a little tired of what seemed to be repeating the same scenario week after week.
If you make it through the first 4 or 5 episodes you will be rewarded.
Horrible, no win situations, organic dark turns for characters with real consequences, great characters.
The show was pretty amazing in the second half of season 1 and season 2-- this season has faltered for me since they are making it more Game of Thrones and less Fallout.
spoilers for season 3 up to the second to last episode aired (I’m behind one I think)
[spoiler] It bugs me that Kane or Abby never ever brought up the real world history parallels with their situation and the Grounder alliance with the Garden station antagonists this season. It also bugged me that when both of them were leading the colony they seemed to never care about communicating the situation to the rank and file…no wonder they lost the election.
It also bugs me that Bellamy may be getting a pass on his involvement with the slaughter… if Finn had to die (which was such a huge part of the moral arc in season 2) Bellamy needs to die as well. Even in in-universe “blood doesn’t need blood” is the idea Clarke is pushing-- as a view, I feel like Bellamy has a penance to pay behind just “feeling bad” about it.
I figured this would be another trite “Young Adult” sci-fi opera. I was proven wrong in the second half of season 1.
Season 2 is just as good, and while I’m finding season 3 a little harder to take in, it’s starting to form its edges and outlines, and I’m totally on board again.
Overall, it gets dark, brutal, deaths abound that you’d never expect, and the consequences of almost every action are weighed against the characters and plot. Not to mention, there’s a healthy adult cast that does balance out the young adult slant. Stick through the first half of season 1, and enjoy! I think you’ll be surprised… which is what you want in a TV show.
As I say it “I didn’t even like teenagers when I was one.”
I did watch the whole first season and some of season 2 of The 100. Lots of potentially good stuff ruined by bad science, bad conspiracies and stupid drama. Really, it was the conspiracies that killed it for me. I put up with the life support nonsense in Season 1 and they rewarded me in season 2 with her in the mountain and there’s something we know they’re not telling her… I didn’t stick around long enough to see what that was.
I might return to it later if I run out of things to watch.
To be clear, this is 2nd class TV. We’re not talking Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Orange is the New Black, or The Sopranos here. Not even Bates Motel. But still I find it entertaining and look forward to it.
If by kids you mean teens (which you very well might) well okay, but if you mean actual kids… no… pretty much nothing on the CW is kid friendly (as if much of anything on TV other than {maybe} kids channels is anymore). Maybe an episode of Flash here and there might be okay, but even then you’d have to be careful depending on the kid, and likely have to screen things first on an episode by episode basis. The 100, no way, not even remotely a kids show.
Don’t get me wrong, that’s not a criticism of the show.
I watched the first two seasons because of this thread. You guys were right, it does get a whole lot better than the pilot. In fact if it wasn’t about teenagers it would be like GoT level good.
