The first season of Futurama is available on DVD now. IIRC it’s 30 bucks and 13 episodes. I’d have it already, but it’s my birthday on Saturday and I’m strictly forbidden from buying anything until then (my wife has a hard enough time finding gifts without me buying 'em first).
I got it Tuesday and I’ve watched two of the discs so far. It rocks.
It’s fantastic! The show didn’t have nearly as big a learning curve as the Simpsons, and the early ones are just as hilarious as the later ones. I even like the packaging – three slim plastic cases in a bigger box. Very nice looking.
Only one minor complaint: No “Play All” feature. Other than that, highly recommended.
I’ve got it and it’s great. Commentary tracks on all the episodes. Great show, great packaging. A quality product all around.

I have it and I love it…watched four of the episodes so far.
I’ve seen the first disc and two of the audio commentaries, and I’m very happy with it. As has been said, it’s a beautiful package.
The only aspect of it that seems misguided so far is the inclusion of the entire animatic for the first episode. I can see the interest in watching a few minutes of it, but the entire animatic (which is longer than the episode itself) was really unnecessary.
I liked the whole animatic as well as the storyboards. It was tough to decipher some of Cohen’s notes scribbled on them.
I listened to the commentary for two episodes and I thought that they were not very exciting. I have never listened to any commentaries before so I do not know if these were atypical. Not that exciting. They had everyone all together and the result was some good ‘hanging out’ and lots of unrelated insider laughter with minimal insight.
The deleted scenes, as few as there are, were very nice to have. Good stuff.
I love this show! When is Season II available?
I love the little DVD cases. I now prefer those to the other 2 types of cases I have.
Amazon.com gives a release date of Sept. 2, 2003 for the second season.
I bought Futurama at Best Buy, but I had to exchange it because the third disc was flawed. I’ve watched every episode at least twice now.
They don’t appear to be grouping them by “seasons,” because the way Fox has scheduled the show, that would just be dumb.
The current collection is billed as “Volume I.” Nothing about seasons.
Play all?
Both The Simpsons and Futurama have episodes that are produced in one season that don’t air until the next. (I imagine other shows are like this as well.) 13 episodes were produced during the 1999 season. The first season only had 10 episodes.
So this DVD features all the episodes produced in the first season, but technically all of Season 1 and part of Season 2 (hence “Volume 1” and not “Season 1”).
I’ve had them for about six months. What the hell’s wrong with you people?
