The pugs loooove going out in our front yard at night to do their business. We live on several wooded acres, but there is a busy road about a 3 minute walk down our driveway. This is no problem when it’s light out, as we can see the dogs as they head down the driveway, and they’re good enough on voice command that they stop long before there’s any danger.
However, now that the seasons are changing, we can’t see the black pug at night at all! He can be standing right next to me, but if he’s in a shadow, he might as well be a ninja pug, completely hidden. The fawn is easier to see, but still, if she gets too far away, it’s difficult.
Once the snow comes, we’re fine - the white illuminates everything, no lost doggies.
We’ve been not letting them out at night except in our fenced backyard, but they do love the front yard, so we’re wondering if anyone has a lighted collar and/or harness they can recommend. I found a bunch online, but so far, none get great reviews. A common theme seems to be that they stop working after a few months, and if I’m gonna spend $25 on a collar, I want it to work for at least a couple years.
I use a clip-on light too, for walks. Google “dog clip on light” for lots and lots of options.
The two I have…one might be too big for pugs. But I have a little bone-shaped one that would be just fine.
I can send them to you if you want to try them out. Dolly doesn’t use them anymore (they sort of scare her…) - we have reflective vests now (for the walkers not the dogs).
Due to a recent local dog shooting, my dog has been going out at night with a light on. Initially I had him with one of those very cheap LED headlamps around his neck (only thing in the house) and recently I bought him a proper dog collar that flashes … I’m going back to the headlamp!
The headlamp could be set to flash but I actually find it easier to track him when it is set to on, it’s much more obvious where he is and he can’t disappear behind a tree. The flashing dog collar seems to be easily obscured (it’s bright red but still a bush hides him and I can’t see it from as far away!). The collar’s tag says equisafety.com … I bought it in the UK when I was on holidays there.
Second the idea of a bike taillight. This one is usually carried by most bike shops for around $10. It will clip on to a collar easily (don’t let the photo fool you, it has a clip on the back that will work just fine), and has 3 different flashing modes plus an always on mode. Rated to last 70 hours on one set of batteries. It’s about the size of an egg but fairly lightweight.
I do 24 hour mountain bike races every now and then, and other riders bring their dogs and use these when the dogs run around camp. They work really well.
Ok will pop them in the mail tonight with my OFFICIAL ABSENTEE BALLOT! One needs a battery…do you have jewler’s screwdrivers? It has teeny tiny screws.
