I have a fun fun fun hormonal disorder, polycystic ovarian syndrome. One of the symptoms of it is hair that I don’t like in places that I don’t want it. Normally I keep it in check with vigilant plucking and shaving, but I’m tired of worrying about errant hairs showing up or stubble where I don’t want stubble.
I’ve tried electrolysis. It hurts like hell and never seemed to make a difference. Waxing doesn’t hurt as much, but it’s only temporary. I would just as soon try laser hair removal, but I worry about the costs and just how permanent it is.
Anyone here on the boards tried it? Were you satisfied? What were the pluses and minuses of it? I’d really like to hear your experiences.
I had it done a few years ago. Biggest waste of money I’ve ever done. I’m supposedly an ideal candidate, nice dark hair, etc. and after six treatments the hair density decreased maybe 15%. With the amount of money I threw away on useless laser treatments I could have waxed once a month through 2010.
Another PCOS person here. I had laser and loved, loved, loved the results. I think it was some of the best money I ever spent. My niece, who had much worse hirsuitism than I ever did, also has had good results.
Sharks with frickin lasers on thier heads would get better results than the place I go. Though they tell me that chin and lip are the most resistant areas to treat, I would have expected better results after 2 years than what I have gotten.
dinahmoe, if you don’t mind me asking, what color of hair do you have on your lip and chin? I understand that LHR doesn’t work so well on light colored hair - which is what I’ve got in those spots - but I worry more about the dark stuff that grows on my throat and my jawline.
I have a combo of light and dark. The light stuff hasn’t decreased at all, and I estimate about a 25% decrease of the dark. For the record, I am a fair skinned Irish girl with medium frecklage. I have had more success with my upper lip than my chin, and more success on the left side of my chin than the right. I’m kind of disappointed, and if the treatments were not a gift from my mum, I’d be downright pissed off.
You know, we can put a man on the moon but we can’t invent a permanent, easy, painless, cheap, 100% effective hair removal method. I’m starting to think that maybe they’re not trying too hard, you know?
(My doctors don’t want to believe that I have PCOS - yes, every woman grows a freakin’ black beard. I’m sure my beard and that cyst I had removed from my ovary a few years ago are just complete coincidences. )
