That’s what it sounded like to me, anyway.
With some time to think about it, it doesn’t look like grammatically correct Russian (I’m rusty on my genitive case, prostite pozhalujsto) It may perhaps be Ukrainian or some other Slavic language that uses Cyrillic letters with common roots but different endings. The singular for booklet in Russian would be knizhka and the plural would be knizhki. Perhaps in the context of a store sign it demands genitive plural which (I think) would be knizhek and not knizhik, although pronounced largely the same. I could be wrong, or the sign could be in another language that uses different spelling. Suffice it to say, I’m pretty sure that you are looking at a Slavic bookstore.
For the Russian speakers, pardon my transliteration - I am Cyrillically challenged on the computer.

My vote is the книжик is meant to mean something like “bookperson” or “bookist”, cf физик = “physicist”

Excellent! Thanks aktep, this bugged me for a while. It does fit in with the rest of the scene, Chekhov is getting spooked out by what he sees onscreen.
