I’m looking to visit Fargo and surrounding areas later this month with my brother. I will be coming from Wisconsin and he will be coming from Missouri. We would like to park one vehicle for a few days and travel around the area with the other. I’m looking for a good safe place to leave the car without pissing off the local buisnesses or the police. ANY HELP out there?
I’ve considered the airport but it is around $30 for the week. With a rate like that it would be cheaper to drive both vehicles around.
My sister lived in Fargo briefly, but no longer. Why not call the local Wal-Mart (701-281-3971) and ask the manager if you can park there? Any stores that are open 24/7 (some Wal-Mart locations and many supermarkets) are unlikely to have a car towed unless it’s there a really long time. And it’s Fargo, not the Bronx, so I wouldn’t worry about the car being stolen or vandalized.
No, but my dog was named Fargo, for “Iron willed”, and he was. He divorced my Siberian/Samoyd mix after 3 years of abuse by her, and is happily living with 3 cats and tons of dog friends.
sorry. couldn’t resist.
Why don’t you try a few random large businesses, either in person or looking them up on yp.yahoo.com?
Thanks for the not-really-quite-so-helpful responses yet. I’ve considered Wal*mart and such and think these will be the most likely places, though I’d still like to actually talk to someone familiar with the area to get a better idea.
Drive out into the countryside(not a long drive), pull into any farmer’s yard and ask if you can park your car there for awhile. Believe me,it will work, and they will probably invite you to stay for lunch or dinner.
I agree with the Wal-Mart post. I work for Wal-Mart and they let people with huge RV’s camp in the parking lot. I think it’s kind of a good-will gesture. I don’t know of any manager that would really have a problem with it…
Or call up a motel, ask to speak to the manager, and ask if you can park in their lot for a couple of days. I used to work front-desk at a Day’s Inn and a couple people asked this. I always said yes if we weren’t busy; I mean, what did I care about another car in the lot? Keep in mind, though, that some business owners might be concerned with liability – i.e., you leave your car, someone dings it, you want the business to pay – so be sure to tell them that you will park it in the North Forty and not hold them responsible for any damage.
You can probably also park it on any public street for a day or two (depending on the local ordinances), but you’ll have to find out the time limit and be sure to move it promptly. I’m confused, though; where are you staying? If you’re staying at a motel/camp ground/friend’s house, why can’t you just leave the second vehicle there? It seems like you’re hoping someone will post and say “I live in Fargo! Come park your car in my heated garage!” I think you’re probably dreaming, but good luck.
Thanks for the motel thought Jodi. I was also thinking along those lines. I’m planning on leaving the car for upwards of a week and figure the police will have the car ticketed and towed by then if I park it on the street.
No, I’m not dreaming of someone letting me park in their heated garage, but I was hoping of " I know of this motel called XYZ who seem agreeable to the situation…give them a call." Is their anything wrong with dreaming of that?
I have family in Fargo. You probably can’t park at their house however the neighborhoods are safe enough up there that I kind of laughed inside when you mentioned vandalism, break-ins, safety, etc.
The Wal Mart idea would probably be cool - but I don’t think the Fargo Police would be too crazy about that (they’d probably think someone is smoking pot or something in the back seat of the car). And yes - the airport is too expensive when you could park for free on the street in a neighborhood.
I would suggest parking near NDSU - not at the fieldhouse, but in the campus neighborhood. It may be a “party” school - but it’s pretty mellow up there and the area is used to strange cars with license plates from other states.
As far as restrictions, towing, ticketing, etc - I don’t think it’s a huge deal up there (NOTHING like CHICAGO) - as long as you’re not there during the winter where plowing could be an issue I don’t think you have to worry about it. However I wouldn’t leave the car in the same spot for the week…I’d move it every two or three days (if you’re going to be out driving around anyway), as long as you’re not going far from Fargo or Moorehead.
Oh - interesting note…if “Trollwood” is still open - go check it out…it’s very Fargo.
