Anyone know anything about Microtek scanners?

I need a bit of help.

SHORT POST: Does anyone have a driver for a Microtek SlimScan C3 scanner that works with Windows XP?

LONG POST: I have a Microtek SlimScan C3 scanner. It works fine with my old computer running Windows 95. The scanner connects to the computer through the printer’s parallel port. The printer then connects to a parallel port on the scanner. I guess that’s called a SCSI chain. This arrangement has worked fine for both scanner and printer. The computer, however, has many other problems (totally unrelated to the scanner).

I purchased a new computer – a Gateway 500SE – with a Pentium 4 running at 1.8Gb. It uses the Windows XP operating system. I also purchased a beautiful new printer to go with it. The printer connects to one of the many USB ports. Everything is great. I love the computer and would recommend it to anyone.

Rather than buy a new scanner, I decided to use the SlimScan I already have. I connected the scanner to the parallel port on the back of the computer. Nothing is connected to the scanner’s open parallel port for the printer. Upon reboot, the computer discovered new hardware. I chose to install drivers from the disk, since the computer recommended using the manufacturer’s disks, if I had them. I installed the drivers (TWAIN and TWUNK) and Microtek’s ScanSuite software. I ignored the other junk on the disk, since my new computer has much better imaging software.

The scanner and software worked beautifully – better than they ever did on the other machine. The problem is that now XP can’t go to standby mode. It says that the SCSI driver is interfering with its ability to go to standby. It also doesn’t power down the monitor when idle. To resolve this problem, I went to Microtek’s website and downloaded new drivers they claimed worked with Windows XP. I followed all of their instructions for uninstalling the old software. I then confirmed that XP was able to work as expected (It performed flawlessly, going to standby mode and everything). I then installed the new drivers. Again, the scanner works great, but XP says it can’t go to standby because of a SCSI controller.

Does anyone out there know how I might resolve this issue? I suppose I could live without standby, but I kinda liked it. Besides, if the SCSI controller is messing with this function, what else might be blocked up that I haven’t discovered yet.

Thanks for wading through this lengthy post.

I have the same exact scanner and ran into problems with XP too. I found drivers from the microtek page that seemed to work but then some of my music programs stopped working because I didnt have the correct ASPI (?) layer. I went installed the correct ASPI layer and the scanner stopped working. In short I have a useless scanner sitting on my desk right now so I too would appreciate any info on the microtek scanner with XP.
