I've got a scanner and I've got conflicts

A friend of mine gave me her Scanmaster X6 and I installed it on to my Sony VAIO with runs Win XP.

The scanner actually works fine, but I always get a whole bunch of error messages when I boot up the computer.

First of all, I get an error message saying that the computer can’t run a 16-bit program and it doesn’t have enough resources for it. But I just click “OK” and that goes away.

But when I try to put the computer into “Standby” or “Hibernate” I am told that my SCSI driver program needs to be updated and is causing a conflict. However, I haven’t installed any new SCSI driver.

I keep uninstalling and reinstalling this program, but that doesn’t seem to help. And I’ve found updated drivers for XP for this device.

Should I just learn to live with all these little “program features”?

Sony computers are always a royal pain in the neck. Why don’t you run W98?

Not a very useful answer, Urban. I doubt is has as much to do with Sony as it does with Win XP. I use a Vaio with XP, and all the problems I have encountered so far have been OS related.

BobT, at what point in the boot-up are these error messages displayed ? What is the title of the error message window ?

If you could identify the “16 bit” program, you can try this:

Right click on the .exe of the program, go to Properties, then Compatibility and select “Run in compatibility mode for Windows 98”. See if that fixes the error.

Next, for the SCSI problem, go to Start/Control panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Look for SCSI controllers or devices. If you find any such listings, right click and uninstall them (ONLY if you DO NOT have any other SCSI device connected. I’m assuming you do not.)

Reboot and see if that helps, or whether it detects and reinstalls any SCSI devices.

If it finds SCSI devices, go to your BIOS screen on boot-up. Look for Power Saving modes, and change it from State S3 to S1. See if that helps.

Disclaimer: Make a backup of your systems registry before trying anything of this sort with XP. Use System Restore and create a Restore Point before you begin.

The message about the 16-bit program comes right after I get my desktop displayed and programs are being loaded at startup. I assume that when I installed my scanner a useless 16-bit program was installed.

I have installed and uninstalled my SCSI driver and that has not made a difference. There was one that came with the system and sometimes when I install the scanner, it adds ANOTHER SCSI driver, which never works.

Thanks for the tips though.

Also, I should add I borrowed this scanner from a friend who was running Win98 and she a bunch of error messages also.

Well,I don’t think you can use it without XP drivers. A lot of stuff you can’t use with XP…Scanners are pretty cheap these days,so why not get a new one?

Actually the scanner works fine. It’s just that the error messages are annoying.

And I have XP drivers.

Hmm, I’ve found out that all the error messages (save one) disappear if I just turn off the scanner when I turn off the computer.
