Anyone know of a good webhost and domain register?

I currently have my site hosted by your-site.com. I don’t like the way their servers handle my emails; the emails are either delivered late by a few days or they disappear into the black hole.

I’m thinking about switching my web host to dreamhost.com. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience and/or opinions on this company. I’m also open to suggestions for other companies.

Also, can anyone recommend a good reliable domain register? I’m looking at domainmonger.com, but it’s only because LiveJournal suggests them. Thanks.

No help on a host, but look at www.domainsatcost.ca . It’s, well, domains at cost (pretty much).

Question - how large is your site and how much traffic do you get?

I know of a provider that hosts for $4.95/month and that includes domain registration - but it only gives you 20MB disk space, 500MB transfer, and 5 e-mails.

For a personal website, that should be plenty, however.

Check out Tigertech.

My site is pretty small; about 4MB and traffic averages a couple of MBs per month.

I’m willing to shell out as much as $10.00/month if it means guaranteed reliability in uptime 99.9% of the time.

Tigertech is your best bet then.

In a year with them my site was never down.

And I had one of those free monitoring services that aren’t free any more.

Hey, at $4.95/month INCLUDING domain - that’s not a bad deal. Jump on it.

I can’t speak for any other hosts, there may be better than Dreamhost for your purposes.

That said, I’ve used Dreamhost for the past few years, and been very happy with them. Their tech support has always responded to me very quickly and even tried to help me with things that weren’t really their problem (like why a few lines of perl I’d grabbed from a free script site weren’t working). I’ve had very few problems with them, those I’ve had have been dealt with quickly and professionally, and they’ve always been great to deal with. So consider me a vote for Dreamhost.

I use a host in South Dakota called Altaire Enterprises.

They’re cheap, reliable, and helpful.

You can find them at http://www.mato.com.

I’ve used them for (literally) years. Maybe 6 or 7.
