Anyone know the font used on the cover of 'Lust For Life' by Iggy Pop?

I guess this is a Cafe Society question rather than a general one? Anyway, anyone know specifically the name of the font. It is similar to Impact but the letters are more squared off. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You can zoom in on the title, take a screen shot, then upload that to a site like Whatthefont.
But I don’t recognize it (if I got the right one… did you mean the song, or the original album? The song’s been on a couple of different albums. You should include a link).

I meant the album cover, with the photo of Iggy smilin’ goofy in a way that reminds me of Bob Denver from Gilligan’s Island. Actually the single has the same photo, but it doesn’t have the yellow border.

Here’s a link to the wiki page with a pic of the cover, …five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour, a three hour tour…

Thanks for the suggestion too.

what the font didn’t help.

Off the top of my head, it’s a Grotesk/Futura kind of typeface that has been very tightly kerned and compressed. Bold or ultra bold. I’m sure this variant has a unique name, but I think I threw out all my old typebooks a few years back when I stopped getting this kind of work – changing technologies made all this stuff obsolete.

If I find any of my old reference material around I’ll take a look.

Cool, thanks!

You could get in touch with Dave Addey at https://typesetinthefuture.com and ask him. The guy’s a wiz about fonts and writes about this kind of thing all the time.

Would you believe…

Permanent Massiv?

Released in 1967 by Ludwig & Mayer.

Aye; I think that’s it, Baal! Good job! 7 replies in 7 hours = problem solved!

At first it seemed like Permanent Massiv was orphaned, but it looks like it has been digitized by Daylight Fonts (of Japan?).

It’s shown on their website in the Revival listings, with a New! banner.

I was a about to say it was Haettenschweiler, a font I’ve been using for headlines in my publication for more than 20 years, but although it’s very close, Baal Houtham is right. Well done!

Whoah, awesome! Danke shoen for the help! Was starting to think I wouldn’t get a hit on this one. You guys rock.

FWIW, I searched for 1970s fonts, and ended up here, Fonts In Use. It’s a fun site that lists the fonts used on album covers. (They sure did love Davida back then.) I found a font that looked close, and then followed their links to similar fonts, eventually hitting Bingo.

The font on the album cover looks almost identical to NoExit Medium Condensed on the website below. If the spacing were the same, there would only be a few minor differences.

Wow, that is awesome detective work! I was trying to get Haettenschweiler to fit, but you found it! Is there a golden calf* we could tip you with?

*(As I asked my confirmation students last Sunday, “Hey, who wouldn’t be up for a good Baal Movement?”)
