Anyone looking forward to Total War: Warhammer 3?

I have not decided yet but, if it helps, a YouTuber has rated the campaigns from easiest to hardest. He notes this has nothing to do with fun level (he had fun with easy and hard ones) and, of course, it is his opinion. YMMV (perhaps a particular playstyle suits you better than others).

FWIW he had the most fun with Skarbrand because it is pretty much just fighting and wrecking things.

TL;DW list (easiest to hardest):

  • Skarbrand
  • Zhao Ming
  • Boris Ursus
  • Skrag the Slaughterer
  • Kairos Fateweaver
  • Miao Ying
  • N’kari
  • Greasus Goldtooth
  • Tzarina Katarin
  • Ku’gath Plaguefather
  • Undivided Daemon Prince
  • Kostaltyn

I’d be interested in watching if you are willing to share your YouTube channel here.

No problem!

Krondys Gaming

I want to watch but I am having fun playing right now.

Doing the prelude.

Don’t blame you at all! I had a blast with it. I’m also REALLY loving Nurgle right now. Just finished my first survival battle! Taking a break to get food (and caffeine).

Guess who is learning he’s too old for that kind of thing?

So I beat the prologue, and I really can’t decide between Daemon Prince or Katarin

So far I am loving Nurgle, but damn is it hard to beat Kislev mass-missile spam. But the world has just been awash in my beautiful plagues; that can certainly help.

I really can’t wait for the combined campaign map; even half a campaign in, I’m already annoyed at the narrative intrusions every 30 turns. Give me a sandbox!

Too old, too married, too gainfully employed…

Yes, that almost sums it up. In fairness to myself, I DID manage to actually stream for 10.5 hours, then “closed my eyes for a minute” right after posting to the board… and woke up 4 hours later.

Yeah, that’s the thing. I like the history role-playing part of those tactical games.

Now I do enjoy fantasy in general - I’m very big on fantasy RPGs and action games like the Diablo series/Grim dawn/et al. But…Warhammer. I dunno. The world-building of tabletop Warhammer 40,000 always left me absolutely cold. I think the whole “Ork” thing in particular rankled at the time - it seemed too campy to the younger version of myself.

I should probably try it. But all this chatter sorta more makes me want to fire up Shogun 2 or Empire again  .

The medieval Warhammer is much more of a bog-standard fantasy world, albeit of the cynical “There are no good guys, but some bad guys are worse than other bad guys” sort. High elves, wood elves, dark elves, feudal humans, renaissance-era humans, northern barbarian humans, Scottish dwarves, the usual. Very little in the game would seem out of place in the Forgotten Realms. And orcs are called orcs.

Plus,. the fun thing about Total War is that you get to write your own history.

Or Empire Total War, set sail and chase down pirates!

Having never played a total war or Warhammer game of any kind, what would be the best first one to try? Not that that’ll be anytime soon, but this thread has piqued my curiosity. I’d like to toss one in my steam wish list.

I think the Warhammer series kinda ruins most of the rest. Not that the others are bad (some are really great) but once you have access to magic and flying units and so on it is hard to go back to only swords and archers and horses.

So, if you want to try out a Total War title I would recommend Shogun 2 for starters. I really liked that one.

But, part of enjoying the historical ones is choosing which part of history you are partial to.

I loved the original Age of Empires, where I stuck with Sumerians. Looking over the Total War list on wiki, I think I might be partial to the Rome ones. Looks like Rome: Total War was released in 2004, so I might be put off by dated graphics. Total War: Rome 2 was 2012, though, which is perfect for my system and expectations.

Is Total War: Rome 2 a good place to start?

To be fair: I got Rome 2 on release and it was a colossal disaster. It was messed up in so many ways.

I have read that they patched it over the years and it is now very good but, to this day, I can’t return to it. I just always have that bad memory.

But, that is just me. Rome 2 is pretty well regarded these days so I think you would have fun with it. I’ll leave it to others to give personal reviews of it. Don’t trust mine on this one.

ETA: Remember on PC you can always do mods which can really make the game better (there are many so “better” can be whatever you want it to be).

Rome 2 is awesome, it was by far my favorite game in the series until WH.

Just finished my first campaign! Nurgle FTW. REALLY enjoyed the playstyle, narrative aspects were fine, but I am definitely going to enjoy Mortal Empires more. Think I’m going to try out the Ogres next; don’t know if I will go Skrag or Greasus though.
