I had no idea that this was out, just came across it on the local version of Amazon. I loved the original Bard’s Tale, so I’d probably give it a shot just for nostalgic reasons, but has anyone played it? Looks like it could be entertaining, anyway.
Played it, finished it, loved it. I haven’t played the original Bard’s Tale games, but I don’t think I’ve ever played a game where the narrator had it in for the hero quite so obviously, or where the hero was quite so shallow and self-centred, and still managed to be funny.
Some of the lighting and camera angles can be awkward, but the plot, characterisation and voice acting are good. I reserve judgement on the music, but there are some laugh out loud moments, and the various endings are worth getting.
The ‘real’ sequel is nothing like the original, but is supposedly very funny. As a big fan of the first games (I have my graphed maps still), it saddens me this is the direction that they took, but I may pick it up if it becomes cheap enough.
There is a ‘spiritual unauthorized’ sequel called Devil’s Whiskey. I have not played this either, but while reports say it has some problems, it is very much in the spirit of the originals.
Well, it’s only $19.99 now, so it’s pretty cheap. I’ve been on the fence acbout it - it looked stupid, but so many people have said things like “I can’t believe this is such a SLEEPER of a game” that it might be worth picking up.
