Anyone playing with their Wii? (pun intended)

Yes, briefly.
You block them by holding them up in front of you.
I don’t think so.
I think so.
I don’t think you can move.

Like the other Wii Sports games, it’s not very deep. They’re meant to just be easy to get into and have fun with without putting a lot of time in.

Baseball works well. My dad doesn’t play video games, and he did better than I did when he tried out the batting. Everything beyond pitching and batting is automated: how many bases you get or whether it’s caught is determined by where the ball goes.

Golf hasn’t been working out too well for me. It’s hard for me to get the right amount of power.

I’ve found that in the bowling game, I throw a nasty rightward curve. I’m not sure why, but my other family members who tried it out didn’t have the problem so I guess it’s just me.

I forgot to answer the second question: yes (and while I’m at it, the first “them” shouldn’t be in the answer to the third one)

You’re probably twisting your wrist when you throw (Are you left-handed? Righties tend to hook left, lefties right). Try and keep the face of the remote facing front and not to either side–it far easier with a controller than with a bowling ball.

You can dodge though, by moving both controllers simultaneously (sort of like leaning) to the left or right. Your Mii leans and takes a step or two.

I’ve got the same problem! I’m with Jayn_Newell – it’s definitely got something to do with twisting the controller. I usually end up compensating for it by twisting the controller the other way, because I can’t seem to hold the controller straight no matter what I do! :smack:

Yes.

Yes.

Yes, raise them in front of you to block.

I think so.

Yes.

You twist both hands clockwise/counterclockwise, though most people find it easier just to bob left/right a little. You can also control whether your punches are high or low by twisting your hands forward/back before you punch.

Wanna bet?

Here’s a good list of the various subtleties in Wii Sports:

Oh, and for Dopers who are still looking for a Wii, gossip on the street is that the big retailers – Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys 'R Us, etc. – are stockpiling them for a Sunday-morning sale. If you’re willing to get to the stores a few hours before they open, you might be able to snag one.

I’ve been theorizing this too. I asked around at Best Buy, and it seems like this is the case. I’m going to give it another try this Sunday, and if I don’t get one, I’m going to give up on it until after Christmas. It’s been stressful trying to hunt one down these last couple of weeks.

Guy at Target said they weren’t planning on restocking until after the new year… :smack:

I got that mixed up, it curves left and I’m right-handed. It doesn’t matter much anyway, I’m focusing on Zelda and haven’t been playing Wii Sports.

Okay, there’s more to them than it first appears, but I mostly meant that they don’t have all of the aspects of the games they represent (except bowling and golf).

Zelda has a minigame that’s kind of hidden. In the fishing shop, there’s a game on a table. Look at it in first person perspective and play. It’s like those tabletop games where you have to get a marble from one end of a path to the other, and it’s very hard until you get used to it. You tilt the controller to tilt the board, and it’s a good indicator of how responsive the controller is. You have to take a very light touch.

There are a few other fun little things you can do in the fishing shop. You can go into first person and look at things like the pictures on the wall, and the girl will talk about them. If you roll into the wall in a certain place, she’ll tell you to knock it off and if you keep doing it, she’ll kick you out. She’ll let you back in if you apologize.

I haven’t even gotten to the fishing shop, and I’m like 9 hours into it!

I just came back from my local Walmart and I can confirm that they had a sign that said a new shipment of Wiis would be available at 8am Sunday. Good luck those still looking for one!

Got up at 5:00am on Sunday, got to Target at 5:30am, and there were already two other folks ahead of me in line. By the time the doors opened, we had 100+ people chasing 68 Wiis.

I got mine, but can’t open it until Christmas. :frowning: At least I have an extra set of controllers and a copy of Excite Truck to ensure a festive December 25th…

Seems like a good place to link the PvP strip for 4 December.

Quick question for those playing Zelda, re: howling stones:

How do I get them to work? I found the second on on Death Mountain while in wolf form, I “activated” it by howling the right thing, and I got a message telling me to come back there when I was human. Well, I did…and nothing. I didn’t see my ‘A’ action change to ‘check’ or anything like I thought it would. I don’t see how I’m suppossed to acticate it in human form.

^ You need to find the golden wolf, who’s at a different location than the Howling Stone. Check your map for the symbol.

You got a Zelda!

I wonder how the Wii Remote would work with my Tourette’s? Most of my tics are facial, but during especially bad times I get an arm tic that can definitely make it hard to type…

If it happens during game play, then yeah, it will affect the remote. But, depending on the game, it might not matter.

A game like Zelda diesn’t make as much use out of the motion sensing. The moving around is done with the control stick. An arm tick will just cause him to swing his sword randomly, or if you’re aiming the bow, the aiming cursor will move aorund a bit.

The Wii sports, on the other hand, might have a more dramaitc effect. Even slight changes in how you hold and move your hand can drastically affect where the ball goes in Wii bowling (the only one of the sports I’ve played.)

True, but you can turn the pointer functionality off in Zelda and use the control stick instead.

Actually I’m pretty sure it only shows on the map when you do the howl. Later on it doesn’t show on the map at all. I know I spent a lot of time wandering around one section looking for the wolf who was not marked on the map only to find that he was blocking my path out to continue.

And just in case it’s needed…

Spoiler for where that Death Mountain Wolf winds up:

He’s at the first shrine pond near Link’s house.
