Ooh! I just noticed that among the “quotes from a few friends” is this:

Steve Allen (deceased), comedian, author, composer and former “Tonight Show” host
“There is no doubt that our entire culture is experiencing a moral breakdown. People can get more family-friendly movies on film and television by supporting the Dove Foundation.”

I just want to know what these people think they’re doing, getting quotes from dead guys? Family friendly movies and necromancy? That smacks of a conflict of interests if you ask me.

Steve Allen was very much for family-friendly programming. He was also a very important name in the Parents’ Television Council.

I’d like to hear them define what they mean by family values, or what they mean by “anti-family values” that they believe children are exposed to in movies.

But with people like Michael Medved, Lisa Whelchel and Laura Schlessinger on their advisory board, I know exactly what they mean. Family values = Christianity.

I asked that very question in my email to them. The pisser of the whole thing is that they really don’t want to hear opinions that are counter to theirs. I think they need to receive a flood of emails so they can get the true pulse of society regarding this issue.

That’s the whole point. They’ll keep the responses they like and throw out the rest.

I got called by the dove people while I was watching a movie. I wish it had been a porn flick. Then I could have turned up the volume so they could hear it in the background while I took their damn survey. It would have been even funnier if near the end of the call I’d said, “Hold on a sec” and then given a long, drawn-out groan of satisfaction. Then I could have picked up the conversation again in a much more cheerful tone.

Wandering through their site looking at the movie reviews, the “Edited DVDs” really concern me.

For instance, King Arthur (2004):

Sex: There is no sex in the edited version of this movie
Language: There is no language
Violence: The majority of the violence has been edited out, but there are still a few fight scenes in which people die. But there isn’t any graphic of grotesque violence in this edited version.
Drugs: None
Nudity: None
Occult: None

So what’s left? Can the battle scenes make any sense with most of the violence gone out of them? Why would anyone who wants “family friendly movies” want to see a movie that is mostly violence in the first place?

They put their stamp of approval on an old screenplay of mine. But they only listed my writing partner under the writing credits, and they wrote a crappy, convoluted synopsis of the plot. So fuck them and their family values; I’m going to go write a bloody sexploitation slasher film now.

I did my part and answered the online poll. I’m certain that my answers were the polar opposite of the ones they want.

According their site the “correct” answers are

94% believe that offensive material in TV, Movies & the Internet is on the rise.

93% want to see more wholesome family entertainment made.

If more was made, 84% said they would make an effort to watch & support it.

77% stated that 75% of today's entertainment does not meet their expectations or reinforce the values important to them.

70% said that the amount of sex, violence and profanity in films bothers them.

76% think that movie ratings have gotten too lenient, and they don’t trust them. (This varies significantly from a survey by the MPAA which shows that 76% of the people they polled find the ratings somewhat to very helpful.)

I’m not sure that their demographic and the SDMB deographic have much of an overlap

I had a similar-sounding group call me a few months ago. When I asked them to define terms like “family-friendly,” and said that I didn’t believe that movies that contained violence or sex were necessarily devoid of educational or artistic merit, and that people should parent their own damn children instead of trying to police everyone else, they hung up on me.

Somehow I don’t think my answers show up in their stats.

Like Dennis Prager, he’s Jewish only in the sense that someone who argues that Christianity should be worshiped and acknowledged by all Jews to be culturally and patriotically superior to Judiasm can be Jewish.

I like their review for The Last King of Scotland

First, the positive: this film is based on a true story about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin and it shows his snake-like qualities very vividly as he switches easily from being charming to a ruthless killer. The film gives the viewer an idea of what the Ugandan people underwent under his regime. Forest Whitaker plays the almost child-like dictator in a riveting and powerful way. He is a chilling presence.

Yet this film contains some of the strongest violence and language I have seen and heard in some time. It was bad enough they use the name Jesus in a vain way, but they had to stick an F bomb between the name “Jesus” and the name “Christ,” not once, but twice. The violence is very graphic in spots. When Amin’s wife goes to an abortion clinic to have an abortion, since the child is not his, she is found out and the dictator has her killed and cut up in a grossly bloody way. A scene of her corpse is shown which leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination, as the viewer sees her opened up and cut up very gratuitously. We do not recommend this film for viewing and we cannot come close to placing our Dove Seal on it.
