If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If anything on earth could have stolen a scene from Jack Lemmon, it was five or six pugs just being puggy.
The daughter of my boss is a relatively new and enthusiastic pug owner, and I’ve told her about this scene and she’d like to see it. She’s very unlikely to ever watch this whole movie just to see the scene (it’s old, see?). I’d like to find a clip of that scene online somewhere to mail to her, but I’m having no luck.
Are there any better Googlers than me who can find it? Thanks for any help.
One of my favorites - the next pug scene, the one where Jack Lemmon as Professor Fate inpersonating Prince Hapnik, contains an absolutely beautiful bit of improv. We didn’t see a whole lot of improv in 60’s comedies, but actor me noticed it. It’s beautiful.
It’s at the end of the scene, which is peppered with The Professor yelling, “Get off of the bed!” at the dogs in between lines of dialogue. But the last line of the scene ***had ***to be an improv. There’s one silly pug dog who’s gotten away from the pack, and he’s panting standing with a his forepaws on his beloved Prince, who looks straight at it and in a gravelly, sinister voice says,
This is the bit I had in mind. I guess there are actually two scenes with pugs: the first is momentary and may be seen in the youtube clip posted above, and the second one is the one I’m looking for. Yes, it’s the scene you describe, Hentzau. The attitude of the pug who isn’t frightened away seems to be “Oh, I know you don’t mean me. You love me, don’t you? I love you.” It’s one of the funniest things on screen and I’d love to forward it to the new pug owner. Unfortunately, I don’t think it exists anywhere online.
