This has tormented me for years. A friend gave a photocopied page of 25 cryptic abbreviations to figure out, with no answers anywhere. I have no idea where it originated or if there is an answer sheet, so I have from time to time tortured my brain on it.

*marks the ones that I just cannot solve. Now, some of these are blatantly obvious and some are less apparent, but these few remaining unsolved abbreviations are bedevilling me.
Where else can I turn, if not to the assembled minds of the Straight Dope community? Please give this matter some thought. Shed some light into this darkness, I implore you.
Thankew. Man, that was quick! I kept thinking 8 S. on a S.S. had something to do with a Silver Star. A Stop Sign! Of course!
