Disclaimer: I am a normal, literate, college educated adult. I have IQ test, Marilyn Vos Savant, and John Stuart Mill books on my shelf. Yet for some reason, I am watching this ridiculous show. I blame a lack of positive role models in Hollywood.
And maybe it’d be easier to just email LolaColaCola and talk about the show (I think she’s about the only other person on here who gives a dang), but what the hey…
Justin - seems like an OK guy, although he definitely sucked last week. Still, I couldn’t believe he was 2nd to last tonight.
Ryan - I’m not sad to see her go. Her performances ranged from uninteresting at best down to just plain bad. She should try modeling.
RJ - I agree with Simon: Boy band yes, American Idol no. I think either he or Nikki should be next to go.
Nikki - A good singer in her own right, but clearly out of her league at this point. I think she’ll be gone next week.
Tamyra - Boring song this week, but still the heavy favorite (though not my personal fav).
Christina - Very good, but not very good enough. I pick her to go after Nikki and RJ.
Kelly - Just plain awesome. I think she will either (a) go all the way and win the competition, or (b) get 2nd or 3rd place and end up with a deal of some sort anyway.
So my prediction for how people will leave the show:
Nikki
RJ
Christina
Justin
Kelly
That makes the winner: Tamyra.
I had previously thought that Justin had it nailed, but after tonight I’m not so sure, so I bumped him down a couple of notches.
BTW to anyone who watched tonight - did they say whether next week was going to be “80s” night?
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve been watching it too. :smack:
I thought this past week was kinda boring. It was suprising to Justin one of the last two. Musta been Night of The Bare Midriff, not that I’m complaining, but sheesh! I think it’s annoying the way they drag out the last 3 people, about which one gets booted.
I thought Christina did the best tuesday, I love that song first of all, and she did it really well. I was wondering about the '80s coming up too, let’s hope not, I don’t think I can stand watching Justin sing ‘I come from the land down under’.
Justin - seems a little arrogant, and as Tibs pointed out, looks like Sideshow Bob, beginning to look ridiculous. I didn’t like the performance tuesday, or the song though I think they did. I really liked it last week when they didn’t, ‘Sunny’, which I like. Will be the last guy left, who knows if that is good.
Ryan - She wasn’t that bad tuesday, she’s been worse, much worse, but there is way better competition now. I said before she looks like she belongs in an Aerosmith video, still do. Did she ever wear a shirt that covered up her midriff? I know she’s tall, but c’mon.
RJ - Too quiet a singer, when he’s done, you barely notice. I heard his mother went after Simon or something, don’t piss her off!
Nikki - The Rebel…because she has pink hair?? She’s fine, but too much competition. She’s out next wednesday.
Tamyra - Best singer and performer, as long as she keeps picking good songs, she should win, but you never know. That last song she did was kind of weak, but she made it good.
Christina - If she keeps singing like she did tuesday, she’ll finish 2nd.
Kelly - Good voice and perky, but doesn’t do anything for me.
If Kelly got a haircut she’d wrap this thing up. She has the best voice by far but she doesn’t look the part.
That Justin/Side Show Bob comment is fricking hilarious. I was also floored that Justin was in the bottom three. I thought he was gonna ride on the teeny-bopper vote alone. He hasn’t had a good performance since the one that brought tears to Paula’s eyes.
Tamyra is a great performer but she has that Miss Atlanta (or whatever it was) saccharin quality about her. And Kelly has a better voice.
Nikki is my favorite all the way. “Hearbreaker” was good, though her theatrics didn’t cut it. Sort of boring to watch. I voted for her and she did make it, so I am pleased. But she doesn’t seem to be popular amongs the three judges.
I actually watched this on accident the night before last and now I wish I had seen it since the beginning. Interesting show, though those two announcers are chumps. How the hell did they land this gig?
Okay, I’ll fess up. I like watching American Idols.
Last night, they kicked off Ryan Starr. I think she was the right choice. Also, I was glad that if someone had to stand next to her, it was Justin. I hope his ego got a hint after being voted next to last. And that apology did not do much for me. It seemed far too contrived.
That leaves…
RJ: Simon is right on the money. He’s boy band material - and GOOD boy band material…don’t get me wrong. He needs to learn a new dance step, other than the spread my legs and crouch a little with my knees bent inwards thing that he has going on right now.
Kelly: Loved her song choice. Aretha does it best but Kelly did it justice. I really like her personality and think she is fantastic. She’s my 2nd place choice.
Tamyra: My first place choice. She really is the whole package and, as Simon said, she’s the most consistent.
Christina: She did a great job on Tuesday night - the song choice was great for her. She’s definitely got the look but she’s not my first or second choice.
Nikki: This girl goes through hell each and every week, doesn’t she? She’s good but not as good as the rest of the clan, in my opinion. The day that Simon said she looked like she’d had a Hollywood makeover…that’s when I thought she looked the best.
Justin: He’s a fantastic singer. I just think he’s…well…I just get a sort of nasty vibe from him. Plus, modesty is extremely charming and he is lacking in that area.
1st choice: Tamyra.
2nd choice: Kelly
Chances are that Justin and Christina will end up with some offers anyway.
I think it’s really interesting that the STRONGEST performers (Tamyra, Justin, Kelly) chose songs that weren’t very well known. I guess they did that to avoid the dreaded “karaoke” label. I think that idea worked well for Justin last week with “Sunny” and bombed for him this week with “Some Day We’ll Be Free.”
I was very disappointed that few of the singers took advantage of the wonderful music of the 70s. Was the 70s so lacking in rock type music that Nikki had to go all the way to 1979 and Pat Bentar’s “Heartbreaker?” (I honestly had thought that was an 80s song).
I’m 29 and I’m addicted to this show. I thought I had to be the only one in the country over the age of 16 still watching, but it’s good to see I’m not. I’ve only missed one episode and part of another (the 2nd night of the initial tryouts, which were absolutely hilarious to watch.)
I was surprised to see Justin among the bottom 3 last night, because I thought for sure he’d make it to the top 3 with the teenybopper vote. I’m to the point where I like just about everyone that’s left. I think they’re all good, but some of them are just not good enough. I have to admit though, I absolutely adore Simon.
My favorites:
Kelly
Tamyra
Christina
Nikki
RJ
Justin
See, I’m not too sure about this, but I’ve read that Fox only offers them certain songs (Nikki’s insistence that she’d only heard “Heartbreaker” three days prior to performing it backs this up), so they might not be able to say “I want to sing ____!” because yucky FOX might not be able to get the performing rights.
Highlights from last night:
Justin needing a new pair of pants after reaching the bottom two. I loved it. Best moment of the show so far–you could hear the strangled gasps of teenyboppers all over the country.
Simon flipping off Ryan–the wonders of live television.
Christina clearly mouthing “oh, shit,” when Justin was called up and she wasn’t.
And, again, this is purely rumor, but I was overjoyed to find this on one of the sites that I visit. It’s not confirmed, but it’s nice to finally see what might be the vote counts for each contestant.
I think Simon has a habit of positioning his fingers in that manner. I don’t think it’s something he intends to do. There have been several cases where people have commented that he flipped off this person or that person. I don’t think he’s really flipping them off, he’s just, for lack of better terms, fidgeted his way into it…I could be wrong, by all means. If so I’ll be disappointed. I know he’s a harsh critic, but I don’t think he’d be that uncouth. Besides, he told Ryan at the end of the show that she’s the first contestant voted off that he would say to call him anytime for any professional advice or opinions she needed.
I am pretty sure that’s rumor. The official site has stated that anyone releasing an actual vote count is wrong. Of course someone on the inside could do it, but I’d be more inclined to think it’s urban legend material unless it’s actually released on the show.
No no no…Ryan the TOOL, not Ryan Starr/Tiffany Montgomery. He flipped Ryan off, then Ryan went up to him and said “Watch the finger,” or something like that, then Simon did it again. It was unmistakeable–I’d give anything for the tape.
Yes, I was originally FORCED to watch this by my wife, now I find myself saying “Is American Idol on?” ::hangs head in shame::
A couple comments:
I thought Justin was a shoe-in until that half-assed apology. Bzzzt. Sounds like he’s already got a PR person on his staff. Just way too sure of himself. I hope he loses.
Nikki: I’m sorry, but there is simply no way in hell a teenager growing up in Grand Prairie Texas has never heard Pat Benatar before. I lived in Dallas for nine years, and it was all I could do to avoid Pat Benatar on the friggin’ radio. Next she’ll cover an Eagles tune and say she’d never heard it before. No sale.
Has anyone been voting? As addicted as I am to it, I haven’t even considered voting.
And I agree that those two hosts are a couple of knobs. Or as my wife put it: “I guess they couldn’t afford Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.”
Man, I shouldn’t even admit to this, but I voted for R.J. I just figured that everyone else that I liked was a shoo-in, so I should support the cute little pelvis-thruster.
I don’t feel too guilty, though, after reading the official American Idol boards, with girls saying that they voted for Justin 600 times. 600 times! Is that even possible? Fox should really be putting caps on the number of calls that can be made from one phone. Maybe they do already, though, I’m not sure.
I wondered that myself. It’s not an accurate count if 50,000 people vote for a contestant one time each and then 50,000 more people vote for another contestant as many times as they can hit redial. I wouldn’t know if there’s a way to cap the calls or not. They certainly need to, if it’s possible.
I can’t believe I actually watch this, but I almost always agree with Simon’s assessments, and Paula Abdul is getting embarassing, getting up and dancing during performances. I thought she was supposed to be a judge. The hosts are really, really annoying.
I would love to have taped the first(?) show were the really awful girl with too much self-esteem training screamed at him that she didn’t have to sing the right notes and that hundreds of people have cheered and screamed when she sings and that he doesn’t know anything about music…priceless!
