I’m thinking about getting it as I read recreationally about 2 hours per day. The higher resolution, better contrast and lighting look appealing. I’m not looking for something to cruize the Net with though I do wish it played audio books.
I use the Kindle apps and have a few books issued in Kindle versions, but we’ve owned one and only one K-brand device. I think tablets and phablets have eroded the base market, and a very expensive paper-white device is a few years late to the game. The models half that price seem to fill the niche better… At least at better value.
Yeah, from what I’ve read (here, for example), it is the best e-reader currently available, but it’s not that much better than other, significantly cheaper models.
Strangely enough, my Kindle 3’s screen finally cracked today, and lo and behold a brand new Kindle just got released to the market TODAY! I’m a bit skeptical…would have to try them out in a store first and see if it’s really worth paying twice as much for that extra resolution.
On a related note, is the paperwhite that much better than the regular kindle?
The appealing thing is the page turning. I liked the buttons on the older kindles better than the touch screen, and this new one has something more akin to the buttons, it looks like.
That’s the only thing that’s tempting me right now as well. I like being able to hold it with one hand and flip pages; the Paperwhite forces a two-hand page turn. So far, it’s not enough to spend $200 on though.
Timely post, I just ordered one today. Can you make them deliver it in two days like normal instead of next month ? The killer for me is the page turn buttons - the touch screen page turning is stupid and annoying, and especially so as I am left handed and like to hold the kindle one handed.
Might depend on hand size, but I can hold my Paperwhite with my right hand and turn pages with my thumb or forefinger without requiring both hands (unless I want to go backwards).
I have a Paperwhite 1gen and think the same thing. I’m going to upgrade for the faster processor and better screen but it’s not imperative. I’m going to wait until the Christmas sales or maybe even another six months until my birthday. I’m sure it will come down in price some.
I’m not, because my old Kindle Keyboard is still working fine and I keep hoping that if I just wait long enough, they’ll finally make a new version with a fancy new screen but still with the physical keyboard.
If you mean why today as opposed to the day it came out, because I was able to buy some amazon gift cards at 20% off due to the Amex Sync staples deal (was only available to sync for ~12 hours). If you mean overall, I always wanted one with page turn buttons and the light, I hated touch screen page turning since the first one I got that had that.
If I had to buy another e-reader (I currently have a Paperwhite) I would buy the Paperwhite again instead of the Voyager. I don’t really care about anything that’s new or upgraded on the Voyager and one of the things I care about the most, battery life, is apparently significantly worse. According to Amazon, the Paperwhite lasts for 8 weeks in their arbitrary reading scenario and charges in 4 hours. The Voyager lasts 6 weeks and charges in 3. There’d have to be at least one really outstanding feature for me to pay much more for a device that has 25% less battery life. The Voyager does not have one.
I have the original Kindle (I guess they call it the Keyboard Kindle now) and I love it. The page turning with buttons makes it better than all the modern ones to me. The Voyage addresses that it seems. If the Voyage had a color screen I might have pulled the trigger on this since that is the only thing my current Kindle lacks that I would like and that is only so I could start buying Comic books via Kindle.
I got the Voyage yesterday (had the Kindle 2 before that). It’s a fantastic device! I was waiting for pageturn buttons and the squeeze works just as well. The screen is utterly fantastic (even when I smushed my face really close to it). Auto-frontlighting works like a charm.
Now I just need a new sleeve - my Kindle 2 sleeve is a biiiiit too big ;). Actually was surprised at the size - have seen a Paperwhite, but this is even smaller.
