I was looking through the games on Steam, and I saw a game called Star Forge. It’s one of these new ‘buy the game and play the Alpha!’ types that seem to be coming out. It’s (from what I can tell) still in the early Alpha phase, but it looks kind of cool. Sort of like Minecraft meets Armor. It’s not a huge investment, even for an Alpha version of the game (if you buy in now you get the full game, assuming they ever finish it), but was just wondering if any 'dopers have tried it out and what your thoughts are. I now wish I had gotten in on Castle Story, as it looks pretty fun…but I dithered and now I’ll have to wait for the game to ship to get in on it. So, how about this one?
I have it; the procedurally generated weapons got my attention. Haven’t really done anything with it, though.
Still haven’t decided whether to get in on the alpha or just wait. Some of it looks pretty cool, and I guess eventually you will be able to create your own weapons which sounds like it would be fun.
Hi XT,
This made me finally stop lurking and sign up. I’ve bought the game (founders edition) and wanted to answer your question.
The answer comes in two parts: is it worth supporting and is it worth playing?
Is it worth playing? The answer is a firm “no” - but this is an early alpha. Most of the functionality is not present and only one of the game modes is really working and just barely at that. There are screens of abilities that are not implemented and currently you can’t even craft anything beyond a basic rifle and a couple of base building features/defenses. The random weapons are interesting, but not really varied yet (there are two or three basic barrels plus a chainsaw - each fires differently and the gun gets assembled randomly - including different numbers of barrels, but there’s not much variation in the end result).
Is the game worth supporting? Depends how you think its going to end up - I like the ideas they have and the way its shaping up, so i’m supporting it. I want to see them make the game and don’t mind adding to the financial backing to make that happen - kind of like supporting a kickstarter project, but that lets you play whatever version is released.
TLDR; Dont buy the game if you want to play it now - only buy it if you want to support its future development.
Welcome to the board, davidklk! And thanks for the answers…appreciate it. I think I WILL buy the game to support it, as it sounds like it should be pretty cool. I won’t be expecting much right now, as you say it’s an alpha and it doesn’t sound like there is much in it yet. But I think there is some potential here.
