Anyone tried the new Domino's Pizza they claim is so fabulous? What did you think?

Hmm, there’s a new Jets near us; maybe I should give it a try. I really wish we would get a Chicago-style pizza place around here, though.

I have fond memories of growing up with Papa Gino’s. Do they still have those in Massachusetts? It’s probably not as good as I remember from childhood.

Try the 8 corner deep dish. They actually have a decent greek salad too!

Oh, and not to be hijacking - No, I haven’t tried the new Dominos. I might, which shows the commercials kind of worked.

I agree, besides I hate the red pepper flakes in the new sauce.

I don’t like the new recipe. The old one was simple and minimalist, and tasted like the toppings that you put on it (as a pizza should). Sure it was still bargain-basement bland ingredient quality, but at least you could vary your toppings on your taste mood at the time and not have it taste like a marketing trademark (giving the stinkeye to you, Burger King!).

Now everything tastes too Secret Herb Recipe ™. Not that it’s bad, but it’s like using too much Splenda in a recipe that calls for sugar.

Oh! They’ve opened one right by my doctor’s office. Never heard of it before .

Dominos new pizza is their old premium “rustica” pizza from 10 year ago.

I think Domino’s is crap. My ex-boss got them once as a substitute for our holiday BBQ (we worked on holidays and we’d get a BBQ as a consolation prize). He was new and had been through one holiday and thought we wasted too much time with food prep. We all complained so much that he relented on the BBQ the next time.

Nothing could get me to eat a Domino’s ever again just because of that incident.

Oh yeah, not to worry. They closed the place last year and we’re all laid off and no one can find a job. Still not eating Domino’s…

I live in SF, where I pass five indie pizza places on my walk to work. I say this because my standards are high, and almost no-one orders from the chain places because there’s always at least five better indie places that’ll deliver to you, no matter where you are.

I admit I was curious about the new Domino’s, as I had the old stuff in the burbs a year or two ago, and it was awful. The crust was basically a matzah.

I got one of the regular crust and one “deep dish” (ha). They actually weren’t too bad, especially the “deep dish.” Sauce was decent, not fantastic I was fairly impressed, though it never occurred to me to start ordering from them regularly, even for 6 bucks a pizza. The real disappointment came about two hours later when I had a slice that had sit on the living room table the whole time. Absolutely awful, and clearly not something that would last til the next day in the fridge.

As far as the big chains go, the crust may have been a little better than Round Table, but Round Table still makes a better pizza overall.

It’s better than it was. Markedly.

I don’t know. When did they change it? I pretty much avoided Dominoes for a long while. I do know that, when I tasted it a few months ago, it was a bit better than I remembered. In fact, if it’s changed from that, I probably won’t like it. Red pepper does not sound appealing. If what I had already had it in it, thought, then it worked.

Horrible. That garlic salt tastes awful(I wonder what the sodium content is?)
Why can’t they just use good flour, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese?
Whatever Dominos
uses for cheese, is not cheese-it appears to be some kind of polyethylene plastic.

We just ordered some tonight, for the first time in many years. Meh–it’s a bit better, but didn’t make the quantum leap it needed to get to ‘good’.

I haven’t tried the new version. The old version was SO crappy that I wondered if anyone in the company actually had tasted it, or asked anyone about the taste. I wouldn’t trust the same company to improve the flavor in any way, because they’ve shown, in the past, that they just don’t get it.

I MIGHT try the newer version if I heard there was a massive re-organization in the company. Until then, I’ll go to Pizza Inn or Red Brick or one of the local joints, or eat TexMex.

Oh, and adding red pepper to anything is not a good thing for me.

Well, no offense, but no duh. Chicago is home to the best pizza style in the world. You’ve got it made, and I am jealous. I tend to stick with a ma and pa local just because they come close to what you’ve got there.

Of the chains, I’d rank Papa John’s the highest - except last week my wife and I spent 24 hours taking turns in the bathroom getting insanely sick from food poisoning - compliments of Papa John’s delivery.

Pizza Hut is grease-soaked trash, which I guess is great if that’s what you call pizza.

Domino’s was known in Champaign, IL for sending deliverymen out at night to sell small pizzas out of their trunks to drunk students stumbling home. That’s the last time I had their pizza, and I guess I wasn’t drunk enough.

Yeah, my experience is different. Plenty of good pizza in Chicago. Plenty of absolutely godawful shitty pizza in Chicago, too. My favorite places (Vito & Nicks, Pat’s, Pequod’s, Marie’s, Chesdan’s, Falco’s, etc.) far exceed any chain, but I’ve had a LOT of pizza here worse than, say, Pizza Hut. Maybe not as bad as Domino’s, but it’s about a 50-50 roll of the dice for me as to whether a ma-and-pop is better than a chain.

I tried the new Dominos once - meh - it’s ok, but nothing great. I much prefer Round Table… but the only ones I have ever come across are back in Nevada and Northern California (where I lived before leaving the USA)… plus, for some strange reason, there are 4 or 5 of them in Dubai. Sadly, the one in the land-side of Terminal 1 is gone, but the one above the Duty Free in the middle of Terminal 1 is still there.

I agree with this. Domino’s Pizza may not have been everyone’s favorite, but it had a distinct taste to it, and every once in a while I wanted to taste a Domino’s pie.

I haven’t tried their new one yet, but I liked their old one. Not my favorite large chain (that would go to Papa John’s, even though I hate that guy’s commercials. (We call him the King of the Head-Bob). In fact, I hate his commercials so much, if I didn’t like PJ’s pizza the best, I’d never buy another pie from them… but it’s the best big chain pizza, so he wins.

Every large chain pizza named in this thread has their own distinct taste. Kind of like colas. If I’m in the mood for Pizza Hut, I get Pizza Hut. If I want to gorge myself on Little Caesar is it.

I don’t understand this move by Domino’s. They must have been losing significant market share to completely change their taste. And to say they’ve improved everything, as **Greg Charles **points out, tells me they’ve been chucking us crap forever.

I have a feeling they will go back to offering the “Classic” version of their pizza, kind of like Coke did.

Dominos is the worst big chain pizza around, by far. Worse than Little Caesars. I tried the new pizza, and it’s a sidegrade from the old pizza. Terrible, compared to its competition.

Really? I would have put Little Caesars at the bottom of any ranking. They taste as cheap as their price. I’m not even sure I’d put them above some frozen pizza’s I’ve had.

I was all set to give it a shot the other day but when I went online to order, their website said there wasn’t a location that delivered to me.

Papa Johns got my money.
