Anyone trying out Star Trek Online?

I was going to wait until the game came out, but I could not resist the urge to get a preorder of Star Trek Online. Open Beta starts next week, and I thought it might be fun to try it out. (never done open beta before and preorders are supposed to get open betas keys and head start befre laubch)

Are there any dopers here that plan on playing this game? I just want to know so I can look for you in game. (Not for PvP purposes, though I do plan on playing a klingon eventually)

I don’t know if those in the beta are allowed to say yet.

I think I want to, but I’m not sure that I have the time or energy to invest into something of the sort. It’s definitely enticing, though.

The preview on GameSpy sounds cool. I doubt I’ll pre-order or do the beta, but I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this one and if it turns out as cool as it sounds then I’ll be getting a copy and at least trying it out.

I’d do it if I could get cable or dsl internet where I live. :frowning:

I’ve been burned too many times on MMOs that turned out to be unfinished or terrible at launch. While this looks interesting in concept, I’m going to wait a few months to see how things shake out before I plunk down the cash to try it.

If there’s a free 2-week trial or some such though, I’m in.

I can say nothing at this point.

Except that if you want to get in the open beta, the simplest way is to wander over to Best Buy and pick up a preorder box for five bucks. No strings attached. Two week beta test, five bucks.

I will definitely be signing up when the game is officially released in February. I have no interest in playing a beta but I’m looking forward to February 2nd.

I want to wait to see whether or not it’s good. But I also really want a KHAAAAAN emote :stuck_out_tongue:

I just hope it has a “FIRE EVERYTHING!” button.

They’re ignoring the reboot timeline, but setting it 30 years after Nemesis in the original timeline so what’s the point? I still won’t be able to play (or probably even see) the ships I’m familiar with so I’m going to skip it.

I wasn’t too interested at first (waiting for Bioware’s Star Wars MMO instead), but the open skill system and open ship selection has me interested. There’s three “classes” but that only determines your choice of special skills when on away missions. All of the ship-board skills and your choice of ships is completely open. With post-max-level advancement, a character will be able to max-out all the skills.

The Bridge Officer system is neat too. You get to develop them and take the with you on away missions.

Whether or not the gameplay is actually fun remains to be seen, but it’s worth it to me to check it out.

I’ve preordered it and am excited to try it out. At worst, it’ll still interest me for a month I’m sure.

I preordered through Amazon nut have not received a code for open beta.

I’ve been looking foward to this game for a while; the videos look awesome but my friends in other MMOs seem disappointed in what they’ve heard about it.

Would anyone like to get a regular team going, or form a fleet guild? I would be interested.

I assume you’re American so I can’t help but for any UK people looking to play, the PC Gamer magazine will be forming their own guild on a particular server. If it’s anything like their WoW guild then I’d highly recommend it. Check the PC Gamer forums to see which server they eventually pick.

Looks interesting to me. I’ve wanted to get into some sort of MMORPG, but so far none have taken. World of Warcraft? Gag me with an orc. City of Heroes? It was ok, but I only had the demo, and after 30 days the interest to buy just wasn’t there. Eve Online? Didn’t get … or I suck at it.

I never got into the Star Wars RPGs mostly because I didn’t have to sort of hardware to run it when those games came out.

So, I’ll probably pick this up when it comes out proper. Then, if history holds, I’ll have forgotten all about it for the next several months until I realize I’m still being hit up for subscription fees.

Or it will be really cool and this will be the one that finally takes. Looking forward to it.

There will be only one global server, just like Champions Online. In CO, each zone is split into multiple instances, based on how many people are in the zone. (There are also separate instances for each language.) You can easily switch between zone instances. You can manually choose which instance you want to be in, or let the server decide (it will try to place you in the same zone instance as your teammates, supergroup and friends). It works quite well.

So, we can easily form a SDMB fleet (I wouldn’t mind forming a CO supergroup either  ), and region doesn’t matter.

I wouldn’t mind forming a doper fleet. If one forms when the game is launched.

A CO group? Well, I need to decide which MMO to drop when STO launches. CoX, or CO, or even WoW. It will probably be WoW, as I only have the sub because I occassionally still play with friends. But if they jump to STO, it’ll be gone.

And being both a doper as well as a ST Fan, I couldn’t help but do a little digging for ST episode name references that would make good guild/fleet names as well as some ship names.

Fleet names:

The Menagerie
Whom Gods Destroy
Arsenal of Freedom
We Will Always have Paris (after all hes an experienced bridge officer :p)
Chain of Command
The Masterpiece Society

Ship names:
Dagger of the Mind
Taste of Armageddon
Spectre of the Gun
Matter of Honor
Measure of a Man
Sins of the Father

I will be hunting for my standard gaming ship names and probably going for either science or crusiering. (buffing or tanking)

Great name ideas! I like Whom Gods Destroy, on first look.

I have TS, Vent and Skype if anyone wants to start planning.
