I can recommend from past experience the DPjudge play-site on The Diplomatic Pouch, if you want to use and internet-based adjudicator. Though as of this posting I was unable to fire it up. Maybe someone else will have better luck.
Hmm no-load error for me too. That might be the way to go, if CatInASuit has any sort of experience with same (or something similar). You can also input, as a player before the game starts, your country preferences (iirc you type in say “FEGRAIT” for the first initial of each power).
The Pouch Online Zine has a couple of relevant articles:
-
One on metagaming (c.f. wevet’s experience in his other game)
-
Another on the 1900 variant (yes we’ve agreed on Standard for this game, just wanted to throw this one out there).
Not getting anything myself either. May have to rely on brain power instead.
Dagnabit… just too late…
Well, put me down as second reserve/anonymous press officer
resists self-imposed pressure to sign name, after reading some of the threads in the Pit
Great! Looking forward to this - thanks for volunteering to adjudicate, CatInASuit.
Well if everyone wants to confirm they are happy to play/sub, I’ll start a new thread for the game and leave this one for colour commentary and for subs.
I’d sub, too. Do we have enough subs for a second game, maybe?
Well, I suggested a variant with more players (like Modern, or even Youngstown, which is the standard map with Asia and parts of Africa and a bunch of transit boxes). I’m kind of burned out a bit on Standard but not too picky if Standard is what everyone insists on.
Here is a map of Modern-10 players.
Oh, and the Judge is back up.
Confirmed. Email is in the profile.
Current players from the top down are:
- John DiFool
- wevets
- Tristan
- pedescribe
- treis
- Omniscient
- Malacandra
Subs:
- History Geek
- grimpixie
- garygnu
If everyone does confirm, I don’t mind switching it to the 10 player Modern variant, so that everyone can play at once. I am also just checking out the DPJudge as well, as I haven’t used it before.
Whichever. I’ve played Dip variants before (made up one or two, once upon a time) and don’t mind doing so again.
I’m here - and I don’t mind playing a variant form, although looking at the Modern map, I would hate to play Spain (only three starting units, and nowhere to go) or Poland for that matter…
I’ve never played a variant, ever, but if it will make everyone happy, i’m certainly willing to.
I’m here as well. Really only want to do standard variation though.
I’m in as a sub, or for a second game.
Keep in mind that in the vast majority of Dope games I’ve played there’s always at least one person who drops out come 1909 or so.
To be fair (since few here are familiar with the map), there’s a series of articles at the Diplomatic Pouch about each of the countries (running in the issues from 1996-98). Apparently he never finished the series tho (thus Ukraine never got an article). A more general overview is here.
Anyway Poland certainly has as good a chance as any other central power-sure in theory the countries around the “edge” may have an advantage, but good diplomacy can mitigate that to some extent (and that’s what the game is all about, right?).
If the GM needs help getting things up and running, he may ask away. The help file for getting a game started is here.
Question is whether we do the open press all via email or here (in which case the game is setup as “no_press” under “rules”-otherwise it becomes “no_partial.”
I pretty strongly favor Open Press taking place right here on the Dope.
Open press taking place here has the advantage of making the game a lot easier for a potential sub coming in.
