This thread kind of has me jonesing for one. I don’t know about what everybody would think of completely open press (no PMs/emails all communication is done here on the board-Honor Rule in strict effect). If we got more than seven we could go with an alternate map, like Modern.
Any takers? Or did the last game leave a bad taste in some people’s mouths?
I’d be in for an Open Press game. I used to be a regular Dope player but the long deadlines and slow pace of email correspondence always killed my motivation leaving to some really crummy mid-games. Open Press would be a really cool alternative to test out.
I’ve only ever played the Classic map (I think there might have been a crazy 30+ player map with everyone only having 1 SC, but I got killed pretty quick there) and would probably prefer to stick with that since the Open Press will be enough of a new experience, I’m not sure I need to further complicate things. Of course if the consensus favors a variant and you need a 7th (or a bigger variant) I’d be willing to play so long as it remains Open Press.
I’m willing to give it a go, I’m probably not going to survive long in my game either.
I would prefer the classic map. Open press sounds like a good idea as it will also keep them game fresh. I would also suggest a regular deadline for moves to be handed in by. Actually, I would suggest that only the final moves to be handed in by PM even though all the discussion is open.
Fair enough. The 1900 map is basically the classic map with a number of gameplay balancing changes, and some expanded real estate in the Med (and yes a series of somewhat complicated yet commonsensical rules on movement from Egypt to the Mid-Atlantic). Germany getting 4 centers has been balanced by some other changes (Italy actually has a chance now, and Russia gets an extra unit if invaded). Perhaps we can play that on a future date.
9 so far if I’m counting correctly. We may need a GM-one function could be to pass on black press (anonymous). Since it was my thread I’ll volunteer (tho I am itching to play) unless someone else steps up (and then there’s the choice of playing medium, i.e. the site to use, unless it is all graded by hand).
What exactly does “Open Press” mean? That if I’m, say, trying to talk Austria into stabbing Turkey, I would do so openly and in public, here in this (or a game designated) thread?
Then actual orders would be posted to the adjudicator anonymously?
Yes. Everyone would be under an Honor Rule never to PM/email anybody, all discussion goes on here. You have the freedom to be as cryptic or as open as you please.
The Black Press option is where someone emails the GM, who then passes on the message, anonymously, into the main thread. This just adds to the hijinks level.
I’ve tried to start the completely open press version, but I like the black press version. Perhaps we could add an extra player that has no units, he only fucks around with players using black press.
As far as variants go, the Fleet Rome variant is a good one for those who prefer the standard map. It replaces Italy’s Army in Rome with a Fleet, thus opening up his opening options and making him less of a whipping boy.
Technically, what I described was GREY press. Black is actually where people fake message origins (i.e. France sends a message which appears to come from Germany).
Milan variant (Italian supply center is moved westwards from Venice) is an even better remedy.
