I translated it.
The old ones speak of a mythical savior they call “SHNOPLOW”. The prophecy states that he will appear to much rejoicing and save us all. But the Wormtongue adds that he also brings great travail, and will surround us with an insurmountable wall nearly as high as the SnowSea is wide. We shush the Wormtongue, and I truly believe that any change is better then no change at all. . .
I am exhausted, but I am back from the grocery store and Thai restaurant. I can say that our street is cleaner than any I saw, including the main roads. We have a lane down to bare pavement that a Geo Metro could comfortably traverse. All the elderly people have been dug out and have a lane into the main channel. I would note that none of the three teenage boys across the street made an appearance, but the military guy was amazing and I now know who to count on when the zombies make their inevitable appearance and society breaks down.
The city will come through soon and mess it all up for you.
Hmm, you’d think the military guy would have been rousting the teenage boys and pressing them into service. “Get your lazy arses out here and start shovelling!”
The last thing I needed to have done before the snow came, has been done. I still prefer we not get hard, but I guess it doesn’t matter if we do.
And now it’s freakin’ coming down again…I guess we’ve gotten another inch since it started. No work or school for the third day in a row.
The feds have closed again, and both Montgomery and Frederick county schools in MD are closed through the end of the week. I wonder what that will say about the rest of the work week.
My next door neighbor has left for North Carolina, probably left the second they said schools were closed for the rest of the week.
I’m quite certain Fairfax County schools will also be closed Thursday and probably Friday. If for no other reason than the kids have no safe places to wait for buses.
I was on Rolling Road and the Franconia-Springfield Parkway (NoVA Dopers will recognize these) today about noon and they were HORRIBLE. I was very glad I was in my CRV rather than Typo Knig’s Civic - parts of Rolling Road had a big pileup of snow in the middle, with two clear tire tracks to drive on… and parts of the Parkway were down to 1 lane. Sometimes you’d be in a lane and then find yourself driving on snowpack. Ugh.
Fortunately, the GS cookie pickup has been canceled for tomorrow. I was not looking forward to having them dropped on the way into the house.
Well, looks like at most a one-day work week for me.
And someone in an SUV-like car didn’t have enough momentum to make it up the hill (which is now covered in freshly fallen snow, but was relatively passable and clear before that) outside where I live and was pushing it up. Don’t know if it was a passenger who hopped out to push, or if the driver switched places, or what. I know I’m not going anywhere in my car for awhile. (Miata’s aren’t exactly known for their snow-traversing capabilities.)
Oh well - time for me to enjoy making a dent in the alcohol I’ve been slowly collecting and forgetting that I have.
Good luck, everyone!
:: makes mental note to check settings on Jet Stream; something’s a bit off ::
On the good side, if it gets into the ditch you can just flip it back into the lane one-handed.
Still no plow and the fresh snow is up to about 3 inches.
This surely does suck.
Okay fess up.
Which one of you DC’ers annoyed the heck out of the snow gods? And who do you plan to sacrifice to appease them?
LavenderBlue, about to be hit with ten to sixteen inches myself right here in the suburbs of NYC.
may i say i really like the snow unicorn. nice use of a killer icicle!
it is doing very well in philly. i left the office at 8pm and by the time i got home (8:20) we had nearly a quarter inch coating.
raises hand
I’m, uh… afraid it’s my fault. Somehow.
You see, I just moved to Baltimore this last summer. Last winter, I was in Seattle. You know… when they had *their *“snowpocalypse”, right before Christmas.
I think the snow followed me.
Seriously? What’s the job market like in Virginia?
Was snowing when I went to bed, is still snowing now. Bleah! I didn’t even shovel much on Saturday and my shoulders still hurt a lot from that! (sucks getting old.) I am thinking seriously about calling the people who cleared my drive on Saturday again. They did a good job and I am definitely not in the mood to spend two days clearing snow by hand.
We’ve got a nice 1/2" base of ice with an inch or so of snow atop so far. It’s coming down in earnest right now. I was notified last night that work was closed, and my spousal unit decided to go back to bed, which pleased me - I don’t think his Crossfire was made for snow.
The wind is starting to kick up, but I don’t think any of the trees near the house are in danger of falling, so that’s good. The last prediction I heard for our area was 3-6", which isn’t nearly as bad as we’d expected. Still, I’m ready for spring - 40-ish days to go, right?
A very cool recap of last week’s snow storm in DC:
Time lapse video: Nikon D200 set to make an exposure every 5 minutes. 328 frames at 12 fps:
I’d stay & discuss, but I have walks to do: the work before work.
There is a nice layer of snow outside, and I can’t even get to my car. Not that there’s anywhere to go anyway, since everything is closed or canceled. So I can catch up on stuff today.
