Apocalyp-sNow...or Storm Track II, The Wrath of Cold

It’s kind of hard to estimate, since we still have so much snow left over, but it looks like we’ve gotten about six inches so far. The wind has also picked up- we’ve had a few whiteouts this morning.

I just hope the power stays on.

Oh that poor teddy bear in the foreground!

What? He’s hibernating.

Looks like you let the North Atlantic Oscillation get a bit out of hand. The NAO index has been low this year, which is why it’s been so cold and snowy.

I suggest, in the spirit of bipartisanship, we sacrifice Sarah Palin and Joe Lieberman to the snow demons. That gives them a failed Republican vice-presidential candidate and a failed Democratic vice-presidential candidate. Sound fair?

WOOHOO!! An enterprising neighbor stopped by a few minutes ago and offered to clear our drive when this mess ends - for $60. YAY!! We’ve got over 100’ of driveway and now we don’t have to dig.

<happy dance>

Um, why would the snow demons want failures? Then again, it’s worth a shot…

I appears the massive snow walls we built unburying our cars over the weekend are somewhat shielding our cars from getting too buried this time around. Very cool.

I think we need to call in an expert on this.

It’s rough here (NoVa near Dulles airport, to save anyone from looking back in the thread). Started snowing seriously at 7:00 A. M or so, and it’ blowing furiously now, fitful gusts of wind coming from every direction. I shoveled part of the walk earlier to take the dogs out…went inside, leashed them up, and when we got back out there was nearly 1/4 inch of fresh powder in the area I’d cleared 2 minutes ago. Huge plumes of snow are rising off the…well, dunes of snow surrounding the parking lot, to mingle with the driven snow coming down. The windows rattle from gusts.

It’s hard to tell how much we’ve gotten in the last 4.5 hours or so, but it’s enough to be serious even if the ground had been clear to start with.

My wife called in this morning and said she wasn’t going in; within half an hour the drifting flakes had turned into this blizzard, so it’s a good thing she did. The feds are still off, so I am too.

It might have been this bad at the height of the (deeper) snow Saturday, but that wasn’t a work day. Today’s storm is pretty fierce for our region.

I’m glad you appreciated the Snownicorn. Yesterday’s sun melted his blunt-tipped icicle horn to a needle-sharp point. I put an umbrella in the snowbank to shield him for a while, but had to take it inside this morning due to the wind. He’s vaguely recognizable right now but probably will be destroyed by this storm.

The snownicorn is lovely - I might have to try that next big dump of snow we have (which should be in a couple of weeks).

Somehow, I’m not doing this right. I haven’t missed a day of work yet. And I did my part to prevent this, I bought a 4x4 3 weeks ago… that should have told the snowgods to avoid snowing on me.

We’ve already gotten 7" in the last day. I guess that means it’s half way over I hope. I’m fricken tired of all this shoveling. My arms hurt, my back it tired. I think I might have to build a 10 foot tall snowman since I’ve got snow banks that high it seems.

I managed to get home on the bad roads last night, and I’m glad I pushed it and didn’t turn around. I called the hospital’s emergency volunteer 4WD hotline and asked them to pick me up this morning, and I was laughed at. I live too far and nobody wants to take a risk driving out here. Some coworkers stayed at the hospital or local hotels (at their own expense, the hospital isn’t helping anyone out) so they could come in more easily today. I’m not that dedicated. I’m not happy with the way they’ve been running the “snow emergency plan”. They told us we could have rooms in the hospital, and free food in the cafeteria - but blood bank techs who’d done double shifts and went to their assigned rooms found themselves woken up a couple hours later and kicked out because nurses needed the beds. And the cafeteria isn’t open overnight.

So, I’m off work till the roads are safe enough to drive, or they decide I’m important enough to get a lift.

I’m actually planning on building a snowcave and camping overnight in it. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and how often will I have the opportunity?

And now, the Weather channel is now predicting a snow event for the deep South for later this week. Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

7" so far. So much for 3-6"…

Sharing my snow pictures. I expect to see a Yeti walking by any minute now.

Do you have to buy tickets for a snow event?

In other news, the governor has shut down I-81 up to I-80, and I-83, as well as some state highways. Ain’t nobody goin’ nowhere today.

[sub]Whee! 10,000 posts![/sub]

When I found out we were expecting another foot of snow on Tuesday/Wednesday, I literally sat down on the floor and punched the ground as I screamed. I hate snow that much. In other news, the weather forecast is calling for more snow on Monday. I haven’t seen any word yet on the number of inches.

And Count Blucher, thanks for the video, it was really cool. I posted it on my facebook page.

More? on Monday? Whereabouts are you?

Last I saw the Capital Weather Gang (Washington Post) was saying that whatever might be happening this weekend was likely to go well to the south of us.

On the plus side - DC has officially passed the all-time winter snowfall record, by a half inch. Yay, or something.

I suppose I can share a few pics with everyone! I’d take more pictures but that would mean I’d have to step outside.
