Apollo Astronauts and the people who don't believe them?

Has anyone actually asked any of the Apollo astronauts what they think of the people who believe it was all a giant hoax? Since many of the astronauts are known for their “colorful” language, the answer should be entertaining to say the least. Please note that I am not saying we didn’t go! I’m only asking if anyone’s heard Neil Armstrong, et al’s response to those who claim it never happened.

I called James Lovell specifically to ask him this. His answer was interesting: he thinks that NASA should ignore the conspiracy theorists who believe the missions were faked.

In a (limited) sense, I agree with him. It’s beneath NASA’s dignity to spend time and money proving they did something that they did indeed do. However, I have little or no dignity, so I was happy to write up a full blown page about it (follow the link in my signature). It was easy for NASA to put in a link to my site, and they did a few months ago. Best of both worlds: they don’t have to do any of the work, but they can still point people someplace to rebut that awful Fox TV show.

P.S. Charlie Duke (Apollo 16 lunar module pilot) emailed me out of the blue (haha) and thanked me for my rebuttal page. Wow.

Damn, I was hoping somebody made the mistake of accusing one of the Apollo astronauts of lying about the missions at a press conference, only to have the astronaut beat the living fire out of him!

My local Fox affiliate did a 40 second interview with one of the Apollo 17 (I think) guys who expressed his hatred for the conspiracy idiots.

This was aired on the ten o’clock News, right after the conspiracy idiot show.

Two hours for the idiots, 40 seconds for the hero.

Heh.

This is so cool. I had an arguement with a coworker today about whether or not the moon mlandings were faked. She was under the impression that they were. When I got home I decided to do some more research into the topic. Guess which page I went to first?

Yup.

I just have to say I really love your page Phil. I’ve been reading it since about the time Deep Impact came out. Misconceptions about science have always been a big pet peeve of mine.

Very, very, very well done. Guess what? You’re a hero too.

Haj

Thanks for the page Bad A. I saw the special unwillingly (I was in the ER for heart problems which turned out benign) and had to watch this swill because I couldn’t change the channel.

What bugged me most, apart from the complete one-sidedness of the show, was that I couldn’t come up with arguments to refute these idiotic ideas. I mean, apart from the usual, “in order for this conspiracy to work, it would require thousands of co-conspirators, all of whom can keep their mouths shut.” Right.

If Nixon couldn’t keep the lid on the shit he was running from the Oval Office, with its relatively small group of participants, how can anyone think the gov’t can run all these conspiracies? Sheesh.
