Apollonious?

I’ve been doing some research into Christian origins recentally and I’ve come across this guy’s name on a number of occasions. Nothing definitive though, and a few google searches have provided some rough going to determine what’s credible information or not.

In any event, I was watching Penn and Teller last night-an episode on the Bible-and they mentioned Apollonious. This got me even more curious, so I’m wondering if anyone has credible information on this guy, and of course, wouldn’t mind sharing.

You’re probably talking about Apollonius of Tyana, a first century neo-Pythagorean philosopher and magician. Philostratus wrote about him in his “Life of Apollonius”. He’s often compared to Jesus.

Alternately, there was an early Christian missionary mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles and some of the Epistles of Paul named Apollos, who apparently was originally a follower of John the Baptist and preached a version of Christianity influenced by John’s teachings.
