App to get podcasts on your phone as mp3s.

So a while ago I asked everyone for podcast recommendations, and I love love love them.

Now I have a new problem/question. Is there a way for me to download an app on my Android phone that downloads the podcast and then allows me to listen to it without using shit tons of data?

I’m gonna be driving for about 4 or 5 hours and would love to have some podcasts to keep me company, but I don’t have unlimited data. Any help?

There are indeed android apps that allow you to download podcasts, but I don’t know enough about the different ones available to compare. Have you checked to make sure the app you use for listening to podcasts doesn’t already have this capability?

Or, if it’s more convenient, you could download podcasts on your computer as mp3s and transfer them to your phone.

I use Dog Catcher. you can add feeds via RSS links and you can set it so that ti only downloads new episodes when connected via Wifi.

I like podkicker. It has this same functionality, and seems to be quick and small footprint on my old, decrepit phone.

Onecast will let you download via wifi beforehand as well.

I use BeyondPod, and it has the same setting that you can turn on, to only download through Wifi. Probably any app would have the same setting somewhere. I don’t have unlimited data, and I’ve used BeyondPod and downloaded many many hours of podcasts before trips.

I use Podcast Addict and have it configured to allow downloads and/or streaming only when Wi-Fi is present. About once a day I update my subscriptions and download a few episodes for offline listening.

Since this isn’t about the content of podcasts, but how to access them, moved to IMHO (from Cafe Society).

BeyondPod can automatically download new podcasts on a schedule, I have mine check for new ones every morning before I wake up. I’m sure other apps can do that too though.

I’ve never understood why anyone would stream a podcast. It would probably take 30% of my battery to stream for an hour, versus 5% to play a pre-downloaded one.

I usually only listen to podcasts at work since I’m at a computer all day, but since I have this drive coming up I figured I’d try. So I definitely agree with you about streaming from the internet via a network or something

This reminds me of a comment on one of the shows on the TWIT network. They were discussing how so many phone and tablet manufacturers were skimping on storage space based on the idea that everyone could just use cloud services. One of the guys on the panel said something to the effect that the developers just don’t seem to understand that “wi-fi doesn’t grow on trees.”
