I reported a post for violating the “Don’t be a jerk” rule. I was then told by What_Exit that I was over-reporting and it was becoming a problem. I went back through my history for March and I had reported 10 posts total. But this I guess is over working the mods. Aren’t we told that if in doubt, report? I give credit to Puzzlegal who, on report #9, clarified for me when to make the report, specifically not on the first violation but rather if it becomes a hijack. OK, now I know not to report that specific rules violation until there is a back and forth. That’s the way to handle if you think the report button is being used too much. But to just say “You’re over using it.” without saying why it is being misused is not helpful. And what is misused? It’s not like I was 0/10 on my reports.
Now maybe it’s not that I used up my report quota for the week. Maybe it was because I reported two completely different rules violations in two completely different threads in two completely different fora within 5 minutes of each other. Not #8 was three days ago. So mods, if there is a clock involved that after reporting a post that we need to wait X minutes before posting another report, it is only fair that you tell us.
Update: I just got this from What_Exit
We see trends. You have a high incidence of Flags rejected. Also arguing this is part of the other trend where you are a problematic poster. Please stop causing extra work for the Moderators.
The high incidence of flags rejected was addressed by Puzzlegal when she said what they were looking for with that specific violation. But what disturbs me is that my reports are judged on me being a problematic poster. I recently got a warning and I won’t go into my side of it, but I maybe I’ve was maybe noted once or twice in all of 2024. How am I a problematic poster? And even if I were, why should that impact my ability to make reports.
I feel like I am on double-secret probation here. You know when at work everything you do is being written up while your coworkers get a pass? You know you’re about to get fired. So based on my last 24-48 hours, the responses (and non-responses) I’ve gotten from the mod regarding my warning and now this, I fully expect to be banned soon for what reason I’m not exactly sure (I have two I think might be the reason).
I figured you might do this. I’ll make it official, the only other poster I’ve ever told to report less was DrDeth.
Also only partially quoting is kind of a shitty thing to do. So as long as you’re sharing a private message without asking, I’ll share the rest of what I said.
So you could take the suggestion or you can argue and then protest in ATMB.
If I wanted you gone, I would have bumped this mess up to the modloop. There the entire staff would have to make a decision of what comes next.
When we do have interactions with you, you love to argue. This gets old. Your last two flags seemed very petty and in response to the well deserved warning you got yesterday.
I’ve made a fair amount of reports and had a few rejected and I’ve been told that in general I’m appreciated. It’s definitely a you thing. Obviously I’m not privy to your specific reports but in my experience as a moderator of many other fora I’ve told a very few posters the same thing. Sometimes it’s because they have an agenda and are being passive aggressive, sometimes they have a vendetta against a certain other poster or topic, sometimes they are just problematic in general and it’s an extension of the warnings they are getting and sometimes they are just too dim to understand the basic rules. It’s never “too many reports” although that’s definitely what they would claim it was.
I’ll share what I think the problem is. I report a lot of posts where a poster will drive by and say something anti-Trump in the thread that has absolutely nothing to do with anything being discussed in the thread. I thought that was the rule - no political potshots like that, especially as anti-Trump post get piled on. Today, Puzzlegal told me to only report those if they actually derail the thread, that the mods cannot address all of the one-offs. OK, now I know.
The other one today was when a poster, in response to me, said basically take the time to read the rest of my posts. I reported it as isn’t this condescending and as such being a jerk?
[quote=“Aspenglow, post:4, topic:1016406”]
What did I say that was untrue? I feel that how that situation was handled whereas most posters would have gotten a note to leave it alone, you mods let it continue until it was warning level. You can say that’s not the case, but I didn’t say you were wrong. I’m saying that’s how I interpreted what happened. Are you saying I’m not being truthful in how I feel about it?
ETA: Basically what I’m saying is it seems to me that out of nowhere (from my knowledge), the mods feel I’m worse than Trump and I’m now on a PIP … and we know what that means.
At the very least, yours was a straw man argument. My post:
Your reply:
Yours ignored the totality, the context, and the far more salient point of my post.
Maybe I should have suggested the “steel man” instead of “straw man” approach to have been at less risk of coming across as condescending. Condescension was definitely not my intention. If it read that way, then I apologize.
Is there an easy way to find this number? Or do you have to manually go in and scroll through the history and count them? (I’ve never tried this…just curious)
I’m not sure I trust the counter or if you can see it, but we see in Green on the user page Helpful Flags. This means flags you clicked. I see 26 for you since we went live on Discourse.
I report any post I see as breaking the rules. Sometimes I get ‘Thanks. We agree that there is a problem. We are looking into it.’ Sometimes I get a ‘Nah, the post you reported is okay’. I sometimes apologize for bugging the mods. They always tell me it is okay.
Not once have I been warned that I have reported too many posts.
I just went through my Messages and counted the number of times a moderator acknowledged my report. I’m not sure but I don’t think I’ve ever reported a post that didn’t get some kind of response from a mod.
Getting to the point of this thread, I felt your comment was being a jerk. Maybe I misread the intention, that has happened before. So what are we told to do? Don’t get into a back and forth with the other poster, instead report it and let the mods look at it. So that is what I did and was told I report too much. So what is it? Report if in doubt or don’t report.
Now I feel like I should reply with appreciation after I get the mod reply, whichever way it goes. I’ve been assuming the mods have enough to do that they don’t need more useless noise from me, and letting the bare interaction stand.
But I definitely don’t argue when the report gets declined. I mean, wtf, man.
