Chronos issues me a warning. From the flow of the text it would appear that I ignored his instructions. The truth is that I missed his comment totally. This warning sets up the impression that I knowingly defied him, which is far from the truth.
I have sent him a PM about it and also replied in the text a bit later when I didn’t get a reply from him.
I have also waited what I feel is a respectable amount of time for a reply before resorting to this.
I got no reply.
Also from my infraction record I have not been a frequent infractor.
I would request that this be reversed, or at least a notation added that I didn’t knowingly do such a thing.
I am also disheartened that sending a PM to Chronos and also later replying in kind got no reply.
If you go from a zone where the speed limit is 55 mph to a zone where it is 35 mph but you keep going 55 you are still going to get a ticket whether or not you noticed the 35 mph speed limit sign.
kanicbird, quite frankly even if you didn’t see the moderator instruction, your post there was so inappropriate that I’m guessing it might at least have been mod-noted even in the absence of the moderator instruction. You knew this was GQ, and what you posted was not factual, it was not an educated guess about facts, it was not a light-hearted joke; it was a flat-out unwelcome intrusion of opinion, and in my view a rather ill-advised one evincing hostility to the parents who had lost a son and their quest for justice, which you called “sadistic”. The fact that this came immediately after a moderator instruction not to engage in any such discussion just made it that much worse, but in my view it was completely inappropriate in GQ regardless.
Given the time elapsed between his post and yours, I would say it’s a good heads up to remind you to look for any moderator instructions before posting.
Yes, it sucks that the mods like to phrase everything as people deliberately breaking the rules, when such is rarely the case. But you really should have seen that post before posting.
See how Chronos’s second post had “Moderating” in red. Nobody could argue they missed that. Why not have a protocol that any “we really mean this, you’d better read it or else” stands out. I checked the thread and could have easily missed Chronos’s first post, had I been a participant.
I think it’s clear that you didn’t mean to violate the mod instructions. Nobody does that willfully then immediately apologizes and comes right to ATMB about it. I doubt many if anyone would doubt your sincerity.
But you violated rules twice. First in the sense that your post was not appropriate for GQ in general; opining about sensitive political matters is never okay in any thread in that forum. Second, of course, is the specific instruction in the thread to drop the subject.
You are guilty of violating the first infraction willingly (and yes you reacted to others who did it first but still), and then of not paying attention to the whole thread (including the moderation including text written in red as previously pointed out here). Your post threatened to derail the thread. Even given your admission of a mistake I think your warning is justified and if I were you I’d just take it as a lesson to be more cognizant in the future about what forum you’re posting in and what else is happening in the thread before leaving your post.
kanicbird, no matter how sincere you are, the mods cannot afford to rescind warnings because people “missed” their instructions. There are obviously people on this board, as in all of life, who would exploit that. Mod instructions would quickly become worthless, as would warnings.
You know that the occasional warning is not a red flag on the road to banning. If you keep those comments out of GQ you’re not harmed.
In-thread rulemaking is poor policy, but slapping down non-GQ responses to GQ OPs is good policy. Too many posters insist on turning GQ into IMHO. I’m probably guilty of it myself. Stronger moderation here will help keep us all in line and help keep GQ factual.
I just got my first warning for a totally bone-headed mistake. But after like a day or two, I realized that literally nobody cares if you have gotten one warning or zero.
The text in red was after** kanicbird** posted and is not the note that he says he missed. You may ague that he should have seen it even without helpful visual aid, but just making that clear.
Just to add, if he wants to give a official warning for not obeying GQ rules, that would be fine and just, thoug I would hope for a frieldy reminder.
But it was the assumption for the warning that never expires, that I willing defied a moderator, which I want to make it clear that I did not, nor do I intend to. I respect they work they do in keeping this board in order. That I was challenging and would like that noted in my record. As it reads I did willingly defy him.
If the post from the Mod and your post had been pages apart maybe ---------- but even if you are replying right after reading the OP you should at least scroll down the page before hitting “post”.
I’ve said it before: all official mod instructions should be in a standard color and format. They should stand out even if you’re just scrolling idly without reading every single post.
The red, bolded [moderating] is a good start. The rest of the text could also be bolded red. Easy peasy, and fewer instances of people missing instructions.
But although folks here don’t do colors much, they do sometimes. And I would hate to see someone accused of “junior modding” just for using the color red. I don’t think there is a way to make a color “staff only” in this system.
Its not a bad idea; I would like it. But ----- I can see some ATMB threads being started because nothing is foolproof once it hits the web.
Yeah, I think** Kanicbird** should be given a Note not a Warning for this. The Op mentioned that case, and it’s gonna be hard to be the genie back in the bottle after that.
Relax, kanicbird. You’re kind of an eccentric, but totally harmless poster concerning board rules. This warning won’t harm you, and what difference does it make if it’s permanent? Heck, the way you got you’re warning is exactly as I would consider getting a rare warning myself here: getting emotional about a subject, wanting to post ASAP, no time to read the thread first and ignoring which forum I’m in. Could happen to anybody. See yourself as one of the cool kids of the SDMB with the badge of at least one warning.
I just browsed the thread, because I clicked on the link and then got interested. And, um… I missed chronos’ instruction, too. I didn’t realize I’d missed it until I came to the warning he gave kanicbird.
So can I second the suggestion that mod instructions be visually set off in some way, like starting with bold red font itt something, like the warning had?
