In the current classic Straight Dope article about if all the people in china jumped off their chairs at once, Cecil mentions having access to the world’s data banks with his Apple 380S GT. I’ve never heard of such a model. The closest thing I could find that might exist back when the article was written in 1984 was the Apple II GS (note GS, not GT, and even that’s from 1986), but Googling I couldn’t find anything matching the exact model number except the Straight Dope article itself. Anybody know what kind of computer Cecil had?
Cecil’s current computer model cannot be revealed for national security reasons, but we’ll tell you this: if he ever drops coffee in the keyboard again, Japan’s weather forecasting ability is going to be seriously impaired. (If this signifies nothing, try adding “teraflop” as a search term.) As for the Apple 380S GT, there is no such model. We assumed, evidently incorrectly, that readers would realize the Master was lampooning Apple’s then-practice of giving derivative versions of its products car-like designations by appending a bunch of actual car designations. GT of course stands for Gran Turismo, and Mercedes used to make a 380SL model. Cecil ditched the L just to be random. He doesn’t have robed acolytes holding candles, either. -Ed
They carry lamps.
Powered by Tesla coils.
Actually, if I understand correctly, Cecil doesn’t use his computer to find information. Instead, the computer uses Cecil to find information.
To be fair, 25-year-old humor doesn’t always translate well.
