OK, so today my internet connectivity crashed. After many attempts I reset the modem, connected one computer directly to the modem, and managed to get service. I am assuming that my router is bad. Comcast will install a wireless router, but that does not include any guarantee for apple. I am considering buying an apple airport, probably with a repeater, because while most of my computers are PC’s my wifes is an apple imac g5, and that gives the most problems with the wireless. In case my d-link router is indeed ok, are there any things I can try to trouble shoot it? I hate to go out and spend a couple hundred dollars if I do not have to. Advice anyone?
What model of D-Link router do you have?
A factory reset of the router might heal some problems (though it will cause you an evening of pain as you tweak it to your needs).
A typical wireless router is: DHCP server + Switch + Wireless Access Point. You can try some basics to verify each of these separately.
Are you able to use the wired ports of the router to get to the Internet?
Can you see the router config screen when plugged in the wired port (typically 192.168.1.1, but your model will determine this)
Can you get to the router config screen wirelessly?
There’s lots you can try, but some details are needed.
Unfortunately, I am not at home right now. Two computers were wired to the router, and neither worked. It wasn’t until I wired one to the modem was I able to connect to the internet. I will let you know what model I have later tonight.
Try giving static IPs to the computers. Make sure they are all in the same IP class as the router.
