Apple announces iPhone 5S & 5C

Story here.

I’m bummed I can’t pre-order my 5S until the 20th, but I’m excited that it’s only 10 days away.

iOS 7 sure seems like it’s gonna rock, too.

I love the fingerprint feature and am very much looking forward to an upgraded camera (I currently have the iPhone 4, which has a pretty crappy camera by today’s standards).

What do y’all think? Anyone want the 5C instead of the 5S?

Apple stockholder here, also been using Apple computers since 1984, started off on an original 128…

I’m a fan (as well as a tech)

My verdict on the 5S/5C?

Meh…
I’m sticking with my 4S

I’ll elaborate tonight once I get off work

At a glance, my world is not especially rocked. I’ll upgrade at some point, but it’s not going to be a matter of huge urgency for me. Getting the best resale on my existing 4S is probably the only thing motivating me to move quickly.

Just in time for an upgrade, since I am still using my 3.

This is pretty much where I’m at. Going to stick with the 4S I currently have and wait for the iPhone 6, which I’m hoping will have a larger screen. I’ve read that Apple is looking into larger screens. In the mean time I don’t really see a great need to upgrade from what I have.

I have a 4S and would like to upgrade, because I like the form factor of the 5 so much better. But alas, that’s not a good enough reason, so I’ll likely stick around until the 6 comes our I manage to destroy this one (fat chance). Maybe if the house sells…

I got my 4S just after the 5 came out and I’m very happy with it. The main reason I didn’t get a 5 then was because my hubby had given me 2 speaker docks over previous Christmas and birthdays that the 5 wouldn’t hook up with. I can’t upgrade for another year, but I’m pretty content with what I have now.

I think pre-orders start on the 13th in the US; in-store sales on the 20th.

There was nothing surprising in the announcement, but I have a 4S and my wife has a 5. It hurts my geek pride.

When we upgraded my daughter to a smart phone, we bought a 4S at the contract price, gave her my (still under contract) 4, and switched the SIM cards. Since the 4S is still under contract until next Spring, I think we might do something similar this time. I will get a 5S (my number is now eligible for the contract price) and give her my 4S. She can just move the SIM from the old 4 to the 4S.

Does anyone know what the non-subsidized prices are/will be? I’m inclined to go that way this time–I’m a bit tired of the contract trap, and unlocked phones have better resale (duh).

13th for 5C pre-orders, 20th for 5S

ETA: I’d prefer to wait for the 6, but I’m really tired of my 4.

I’ve been waiting most of the year to upgrade. I have a 4s, which works well-enough, but:

  • the wife wants to go smartphone, and would be happy with my 4s
  • I don’t use the unlock code feature, so the fingerprint scanner would be a welcome security bonus for me in practice
  • the slightly larger screen (vs the 4s) will help in the critical area of The Simpsons:Tapped Out

I was hoping that the announcement would include a new iPad but it didn’t. I’ve also got an iPhone 4S and am happy to keep using it. The only thing compelling about the 5S is the fingerprint reader.

I sat through the MacWorld live blog; I found most everything useful to how I use the phone (except iWork, but I can see the benefit to others), and think the new camera features are very cool (burst mode, slow-motion video, HDR-like multi-image sourcing, better flash). Not sure how much of that (besides dual-flash) is iOS 7 related and how much is the 5s.

Pretty yawny. Apple either needs to remember what innovation means or stop holding major events to introduce new colors and minor feature improvements. Some of the recent product announcement events have approached self-parody.

In Australia:

I hope we get a jar of lube thrown in free for that extra $640.

You are comparing prices with a contract to prices without.

As to why I’m staying with my clunky old “dinosaur” of a 4S as opposed to a shiny new 5 or 5S?

I have a decent amount of Dock connector stuff
I like the pocket freindly form factor of the 4S
I like the heft and solidity of build of the 4S
I use an Otterbox Defender case, so the fingerprint scanner in the Home button would be unusable

Even though this may be (and probably is) rampant paranoia on my part, I don’t like the fact that the 5S can capture fingerprint data, even if it’s stored in the phone, the fact is the data exists in a readable form, and could in theory be accessible, plus, even if the sensor is “turned off”, how do we know it’s not capturing data anyway and just not “using” it…

What? Me paranoid?.. Who wants to know?

The FPS tech “IS” cool, yes, but not a selling point to me

Don’t you folks (like most of the world) get unlocked phones? A better comparison is to the unsubsidized and unlocked US prices, which are $549 and $649 for the 16GB and 32GB 5C models, respectively. Still higher in Oz, but maybe that includes VAT (most of us here have to pay sales taxes on top of the stated price).

Fair enough. For that extra $190 maybe we can get a smaller jar of lube.

Given the history of pricing here I doubt we’ll ever see anyting close to the $99 even with a plan.

Wow. If you’re worried about data being captured, your smartphone passively sitting on a counter or in a pocket is way down on the worry list.
