Who's getting an iPhone 6?

I’m going to pre-order a 6+ on Friday!

The Mrs. has my old 4S, so she’ll likely get a 6. She’s rather OK with the size of the 4S, so the Plus version is probably out (and it’s $100 more).

I’m going to wait a few weeks, but a 6 is definitely in my future. I’ve been holding on to my 3GS too damn long. I won’t opt for the Plus, because it won’t fit comfortably in my pocket. But I will spring for all the memory I can get.

I really hate to admit it, but I’m coveting a 6 Plus, I have no NEED of one, as my 4s does everything I need, but the larger screen would e advantageous for online use, as I rarely use the phone feature.

I would definitely miss the pocketability of the 4s, it fits the watch pocket of my jeans just fine

Plus, I have a problem getting rid of perfectly functional and usable hardware just because it’s “old”

Meh, I’ll wait until my 4s dies naturally, it’s the responsible thing to do

My current phone is a 4S, and I’ve had it for three years, so I’m ready for a new one. I’d like to see the 6 Plus in person and see whether it will fit comfortably before I decide between the two new models.

Edited to add, I’m thinking of making a cardboard mockup of the 6 Plus to help to decide.

I’ve never had nor particularly felt the need for a smart phone. However, my pay-as-you-go phone is ripping me off (no way to check specific charges, burning minutes much faster than I know I’m using them) and I’d like a hotspot, so I’m probably going to buy a 6 or 6+.

I’ll wait a year, until early adopters finish field debugging the thing.

I will get one as soon as I can. I have a 64GB 4S. Fantastic phone, but my eyes have gotten too bad to use a lot of features comfortably. I need to go to the Apple Store after they’re out to see if I can fit the 6+ into my pocket, as I’d like the extra screen real estate, better battery life and the slightly better camera specs.

We recently switched to a no-contract plan on AT&T, which saved us almost $90/month on 4 phones. That means I will have to pay full price for whichever model I get (contract price + $450). Since we keep phones for 3+ years, that saves more than $300/phone over its useful life, but it’s a killer on cash flow when you upgrade.

I’m really interested in the watch’s walking directions that use a tap on the wrist to tell you when and which direction to turn. That seems like a stunningly useful accessibility feature for the blind, which I am. I will definitely be checking those out when they arrive next year.

ETA: Gazelle is currently offering $110 for my 4S/64GB unlocked (+5% for getting paid as an Amazon gift card). Tempting.

I thought Apple was under a lot of pressure to make something groundbreaking instead of an upgraded version of what is?
I’ve got the iphone 5 and was ready to go with a 6 but there’s nothing all that new about it that makes me want to upgrade.
“It’s faster”. I don’t think speed has ever been an issue with my 5. I can’t ever remember thinking I need faster processing speed.
“It’s bigger”. I’m fine with the 5 and I guess a little bigger would be nice but not really a huge selling point.
“It’s thinner”. Hmm. I never understood why this was a big deal with people when everyone seems to put them into some sort of bulky case anyways. I’d prefer Apple come up with something scratchproof to replace the aluminum case so you wouldn’t need a case at all.
Any other supposedly ‘groundbreaking’ selling points I’m missing?

Yes. I have a 4S and it’s been feeling kind of old for a while. (My wife is using a 4 and hers really feels old.)

I’m torn between the 6 and 6+, though. The 6+ just seems kind of … too big.

I think I’ll be just upgrading from my iPhone 4 to a 5C or 5S. I’m fine with being a generation behind.

The big breakthrough is Apple-Pay using NFC (near-field communication) so you can wave your phone over sensors at stores that provide NFC and pay with your phone.

That coupled with the fingerprint sensor are huge win in my book!
I knew it was coming… I’m glad that I waited.

The NFC feature sounds useful.

But as someone who has never owned an Apple product (I have Android phone and tablet and a Windows desktop and that works great for my probably un-hip and pedestrian requirements) can somebody provide a succinct reason for the iProducts fan-worship? For those of us that really don’t get the drooling anticipation for all things i_, and why they must be new?

I hope this isn’t seen as a threadshit; I’m honestly curious. Are Apple products and iPhones really that much better or is it a cult-ish, if you have to ask you won’t understand sort of thing?

I know many people with iPhones. They do the same things everyone (including me) does: Go online, make phone calls, email, take photos, text, shop. Nobody I know with an iPhone does anything special or different than I do with my mobile devices. We all do the same stuff and get the same results.

I understand your question, and I don’t think it’s a threadshit. The honest answer is… there’s no real answer. iPhone (and Apple in general) fans drool over iPhones and iMacs just as much as Android fanatics drool over the Galaxy S5 or the Moto360, just as much as Nintendo adherents drool over WiiSports and X-Box junkies drool over a new Halo game. There’s some small portion of the population that feels a particular brand loyalty, be it smart phones or cars or your town’s best sushi restaurant, and it’s easy to highlight their loyalty to fill news cycles.

Apple in particular is one of the most valuable companies in the world, and “Apple-obsessed geeks” practically writes itself when it comes to journalism. There will be people camping in line for the iPhone, just like people camped in line for Star Wars or Harry Potter. I honestly don’t think this is a phenomenon unique to Apple, and “smug Apple user” as a stereotype applies to just as large a percentage of Apple users as “smug android user” applies to that user base.

Apple makes some nice phones. I really like my iPhone. But Google and Microsoft also make some nice phones, and I have plenty of positives to say about their handsets too.

I hope that was helpful!

Generally speaking, it has to do with Apple’s attention to detail.
Software.
Hardware.
User Interface.

All of these are usually more polished, and more usable than their non-Apple counterparts. It’s the same reason auto mechanics use Snap-on and not Home Depot brand tools, or Chefs using Wusthof and not some cheap set of knives.

Apple products also inter-operate well, which means a Mac household is more likely to have a good experience with an iPhone or iPad than an Android-based one.

I think that’s more of a subjective opinion than fact beowulff.

I’m not an Apple fan and won’t be buying anything. I’m keeping my eye on the Samsung Gear watches though, the latest one has it’s own Sim.

Well, that’s your opinion, isn’t it?

What forum are we in, anyway?

I’d add a couple of things that are important to me with regard to Apple products:

[ul]
[li] As I mentioned above, I’m (nearly) blind. Apple’s attention to accessibility throughout their product line is amazing. They’ve included accessibility features built-in, and, moreover, have pushed developers hard to use them, for years. [/li][li] Because Apple controls hardware and software, OS updates are available for virtually every device newer than about 3 years old (for phones, longer for Macs). Most (not all) Android phones have software updates controlled by the carrier, at least in the US. The stats for adoption of operating system patches and major upgrades are very different for the two platforms.[/li][li] Apple makes its money on the hardware. Sure, they make some money on services, but they have zero incentive to sell you machines full of crapware, or to harvest your information to sell ads. It’s a cleaner experience. The tradeoff, of course, is that they do not make low-end, low-margin products, because they have no way to make money off them. In short, when I buy Apple products, I feel like I’m the customer. With Google/Android, I’m a user, but the customers are the people buying ads. Nothing wrong with that, but Apple’s business model suits me better for hardware. [/li][/ul]
