Ok. I’ve been working at my current job for 5 years since I was 15 years old, so I’m new to this whole applying for a job thing. Now I’m applying for another job, but I am stumped on the question I hate the most - “Why do you want to work for us, and why do you feel you are qualified.” Now this is some bullshit. I am not a narccisist, so I don’t want to sound like a egotistical asshole. But I also don’t want to say - “I want your money.” What does one say to that kind of a question? Saying, “I want to build a career”, sounds corny as hell, since that is not my intention, I just want the job and if I get it will see what happends from there. Any advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
That is where you get to show off what you know about their company. And you SHOULD know something about it - if not, do some research. Point out several areas of the company that appeal to you, or aspects of the job you’re looking forward to, and explain how they fit in with any potential for growth or experience for you.
Its perfectly okay to make it known that you’re not in this for a career. But expect to give the impression that you’re prepared to stay there 3-5 years, and see it as a wonderful opportunity to become involved in the exciting field/area of <insert what you’ll be doing here>.
As for your qualifications, that’s also a tough one. If you have experience in this area, tell them. But if you don’t, that’s okay. Just have examples handy of times when you have been inventive and/or taken the initiative.
Good luck!
They’re just looking for some bullshit back that proves that you can think and put together a sentence. It’s the bullshit dance. Don’t worry about being corny; it comes with the territory.
It’s hard to write up a sample since I don’t know exactly what kind of job you’re looking for, but in general something like the following works:
“I’d like to work at <company name> because the position allows me to use my existing <whatever your skills are> skills and also to learn new skills. I’m looking for a long-term position where I can continue to grow, and look forward to working in a team environment.”
Like I said, it’s vague, but I don’t know what job you’re applying for, so I did my best.
There are several obstacles to getting the job you want.
Luckily they want somebody - give them reasons to make it you!
Your CV should be typed, clear and short.
As Connor said, you should know something about the company.
Show you’ve done some research and that you’re qualified.
Be honest. It’s relatively easy for them to check, and it should impress them. (If it doesn’t, perhaps you don’t want to work there).
Be punctual, dressed appropriately and look confident.
Good luck!
