No, not if you slow down, as intended. What they actually do is to prevent idiots from racing down residential streets because they’re in such a fucking hurry they don’t care about anything except shaving two seconds off their driving time.
No, they damage your car even if you slow down, and there’s other issues (wiki):Disadvantages[edit]
L*ocal authorities have cited disadvantages to speed bumps:
The city of Modesto in California, U.S. produced a fact sheet which contains the following disadvantages:[8]
Slow response time of emergency vehicles;
May divert traffic to parallel residential streets; and
There is a possibility of increased noise and pollution for residents living immediately adjacent to the speed bumps.
The English town of Eastleigh states the following as disadvantages:[9]
Can cause damage to some vehicles;
Can increase traffic noise, especially when large goods vehicles pass by;
Signs, street lighting and white lines are all required and may be visually intrusive;
Can cause discomfort for drivers and passengers; and
Can cause problems for emergency services and buses.
Drivers are distracted by the bumps, therefore ignoring other hazards such as children; and
Humps can impede or slow emergency vehicle access to areas.
Other sources argue that speed bumps:
Increase pollution as traffic travels in a lower gear using significantly more fuel per mile;
Are a substitute for active enforcement;
Increase noise by both traversing over the bumps and by using more engine revs than normal;
Cause spinal damage[10] or aggravate chronic backache.
In 2003, the chairman of the London Ambulance Service, Sigurd Reinton was reported as claiming that delay due to speed bumps was responsible for up to 500 avoidable deaths from cardiac arrest each year. He later denied the statement.[11]
In Sweden, an evaluation of spinal stress in bus drivers against ISO 2631-5 required on health grounds:[12]
bus drivers to avoid certain streets until the humps were modified; and
a reduction of the maximum acceptable speed to 10 km/h on one street for drivers encountering 150 humps in a day.*
Based on my pleasant experiences with tow-and-lock operators (one for a ticket, which deserves its own rant and the other or an accident which was 100% not my fault, but I was treated like a criminal by the scumbag tow operator who was storing my totaled car), I want to bow down and worship Britt McHenry. The people that run these bloodsucking enterprises ARE usually uneducated, trash scum sucking human beings who can’t get a job doing anything else.
There was nothing she said that was racist or bigoted, and as a matter of fact, the rude bitch behind the counter made a crack at her looks too, which emphasizes what kind of scum these people usually are. FUCK park-ticket-and tow operators. I hope she sues BOTH the tow operator AND ESPN.
She got fired for what, exactly?
One of my relatives is begging on Facebook and gofundme. No money to pay his rent but he adopted a second dog. No time for the all the potential second jobs I sent him but he can spend hours playing games on Facebook. He’s eating potatoes for dinner and it is his own fault.
After 2+ years of radio silence, I get a message from a “friend” who was wanting to see if I could provide legal assistance / advice for a personal matter. No opening pleasantries, asking how I’ve been, or anything. Just, “Hey Calatin! Could you help me out on this matter…”
Yeah, I helped him. (It wasn’t a complicated matter, and I wanted to do it as a sign of good faith and goodwill.) Some other friends and co-workers said I shouldn’t have, but it gave me the chance to show that I was the bigger man.
yawn Call me when potatoes are an every-other-week luxury.
If your tires are flimsy enough that a thumb tack will give you a flat you need to spend more money on tires.
Snipped for irrelevance.
From your own source:
Although speed bumps are very effective in keeping vehicle speed down, their use is sometimes controversial as they can cause noise and possibly vehicle damage if taken at too great a speed.
All you quoted are a few local municipalities that say that speed bumps may cause problems, and very little about possible damage to cars. If you can find any traffic solution that does not have side effects, please advise. Traffic signals, stop signs, pretty much everything has some down side, but the general consensus is that they are worth it for the benefit provided.
Either that or you’re riding a Big Wheel.
I totally hear this in my mind using the "If your erection lasts more than four hours … " voice.
I agree. I know one group who stole from the cars they towed and another who stole cars- period.
She didnt get fired she got suspended for two weeks? . But that was too much, IMHO.
Is that suspension without pay? It wouldn’t be much of a punishment if she was still getting paid. And I thought it was only for one week.
I think so, and I saw the video. It was heavily edited to make her look bad, the cashiers comments were mostly edited out.
I hate to say this, but I am on Britt McHenry’s side in this.
? You park illegally, sucks for you. You take my paid for parking space, I will have your ass towed. Back when I still lived in Rochester, NY, I paid $25 a month for my own personal private parking space at my apartment so I could park next to where I actually lived instead of taking pot luck. You want to park next to the building, pay the money and stop taking my space. Asshole got towed something like 70 times in 6 months. Sucked to be him, but it was my fucking space.
And businesses who have their own parking lots want their employees and customers to be able to have parking, that is why they have parking lots. Not so random people can park there. And no, I have never worked for a towing company. [Though at one time I had a part time job working in a parking garage as security, and I called in a fair amount of tows there as well]
How hard is it to follow rules?:dubious:
If you read the reviews and BBB complaints, they didn’t always wait until the car was actually parked illegally.
In other words, they were *stealing cars and holding them for ransom. *
Ah, shit. My brother is back in the hospital. Went in for a urinary tract infection, went into cardiac arrest, was revived. The docs told him they could do a bypass operation, but since his kidneys are only operating at 20%, they would likely fail and he’d end up on dialysis. Additionally, he has MERSA and pneumonia and sepsis. This all follows on the amputation of both legs over the past year or so (diabetes makes you its bitch). I have a feeling his timer is ticking down to zero. We’ve been estranged over the past couple of years (and for good reason), but still: only brother, ya know?
On top of all this, his wife went out to the hospital parking lot to walk the dog and got hit by a truck and got all banged up. Not that I give a shit about that fucking cunt, and admit to a certain amount of schadenfreude over that, but it makes things harder for his daughter to deal with it all.
Has his daughter considered a career in country songwriting? Sounds like she’s got the material for it.
Nobody (here) is bitching about cars being towed by legit companies for legit reason, aruvqan.
Holy shit, Chefguy. That’s a lotta suck.
I know there’s a lot of conflicting emotions for you, since sometimes bad things happen to bad people, but you’ve overlooked one crucial detail:
How’s the dog?
Not only that but there are tow truck drivers who hide near large, nearly empty parking lots and tow away cars of drivers who leave the property or are getting picked up by another driver to go somewhere else. Theres a big difference between that and towing someone in a handicapped space, for instance. These people are predators.
Yep.
and Yeah, Chefguy- man. Geez.![]()
I’ll bet someone stole their pickup truck too.
