April Fool's Day and Websites

The standard logo at Pirate Bay has changed which is always a sign that something’s up. Going to their blog it says that they are re-locating their servers to the Korean Embassy in Sweden to get more protection against lawsuits.

xkcd has a print syndication deal that I hope is a joke. Also Slashfood has a new focus.

I thought this one was pretty good too: “Why Google’s G-Whiz will best Microsoft’s iLoo in growing market for integrated Web kiosk toilets”

I wouldn’t put it past Ebaums to do something today:

Can anyone verify this for me?

The Guardian: Tony Blair to turn to acting

Not a major website, just a rather good science blog, but:

Tetrapod Zoology describes rhinogradentians in excellent detail. Probably the most diligent and long April Fool gag I’ve seen this year.

I’m not sure I can give the Snouters website many props. My experience is from the original book (Well, the US edition) dating back to the late 50’s. (1957 for the original publication, and 1967 for the US publication.)

Mind you, a grandly fun book, I thought. But it’s not really what I’d call a good April Fool’s joke.

www.collegehumour.com is “up for sale”.
Anybody familiar with the site and who visits regularly knows that it’s been up and running for ages and shows no signs of quitting being a repository for useless, well, college humour. Bet they got a few people who forgot what day it was.

anybody on facebook has been seeing several joke messages.
One of them being “You just tried to ford the river and two of your oxen died”, a reference to a facebook group that started ages ago at tons of campuses by the name of “I just tried to ford the river and my fuckin oxen died” (In tribute, of course, to Oregon Trail)

I was listening to NPR news last night, and they had a story about the “miracle fruit,” a berry that grows in west Africa that, when eaten, will make sour fruit eaten afterwards taste sweet. They interviewed a scientist who explained why it happened, they discussed the history of the fruit and its use in food, and had three NPR reporters test it out.

My immediate thought was, Early April Fool’s gag!

But apparently not.

My favorite of NPR’s gags was in 1988 when they did a story about how the Reagan administration had made a deal to sell Arizona to Canada to help reduce the budget deficit. What made this involved story so great was that they had interviews with former Arizona governor Bruce Babbitt (who would become the Canadian governor general) and other real public figures who were all telling the story with straight faces.

Oh, my. Even as a casual Star Trek fan that’s hilarious.

“Sanjaya: early 21st-century creature of unknown origin, but with mind-altering qualities. Lifespan unknown, possibly immortal.” (Sanjaya is the name of an American Idol contestant of dubious talent)

“Quote of the day: ‘I once saw a gazelle giving birth.’- Captain Jonathan Archer
Trivia: Who once said they saw a gazelle giving birth? Trick question. No one would actually say that.”
